Hello All, I am currently working on a 1981 Jeep Scrambler with a neighbor and we are having acouple issues with the engine.

1) The pressure release on top of the engine cover is leaking oil and there is bad pressure. How can we fix that?

2) The engine is running but when it does it sound rough. Any suggestions?

Thank you

An 81 probably came with a inline six. A lot of crankcase pressure usually indicates a lot of piston blowby into the crankcase. Most usually caused by extremely high mileagwe or lack of regular maintenance/oil change etc. If the engine is running rough as in shakeing it imay be fouled plugs or weak compression on some of the cylinders or even a bad vacuum leak. As for rough as in knock, knock it could be worn rod and main bearings. Good luck, bg

Need to do a compression check and go from there. Severe blowby as stated earlier could be piston, rings, valves. head gasket etc.

Those years could have had a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder. I am familiar with the 6 cylinder. The rough running is likely attributed to the terrible Carter 2bbl carburetor and very likely has vacuum leaks.
If your concerned about a budget then rebuild the existing carburetor and replace all the vacuum lines. I would also check the tightness of the intake manifold. It could have a bad gasket and leak air.
If you have some money to spend then I would opt for an aftermarket carburetor and replace all the vacuum hoses.
Your other issue sounds like it could have a bad pcv valve. Replace it.

Rough running can also be attributed to a loose/worn distributor. If its worn enough, the rotor's absolute position at any given time is indeterminate; thus ignition can happen at, say, 3-10° BTC instead of at 6.5°. A worn timing chain can have the same effect: the rotor's position cannot be predicted.
