Wow - what a blast

Must see Airline Fire....

Hey guys, long time no post. anyways, i came across a 86 gmc pickup with the 6. 2 diesel for sale. the owner is asking 1100 for it and is in nice shape with 102k on it. is it worth picking it up in hopes tha ti might be able to polish it up and give it a little tlc to maybe resale or keep?

Sold my '86 F250 diesel 4x4 a few months ago. Got $1100 out of it, with 141k on it. Mice got into it, and has rusted out wheel wells on the bed.

That truck looks pretty clean and straight from what I can tell. Looks to be 2wd? The 6. 2 is REALLY gutless, but generally seem to be reliable, and tend to get decent mileage.

yep, its a 2wd but i was thinking that it might be something that i can get and clean up and resell for a lil cash (college student so i do anything for a lil $) or ill keep it and let my girl drive it. i dunno. i have no clue about these old detroits. how do they like to start at -10?

Im currently fighting my 6. 2 dump truck... . Id say buy it and turn around and sell it but dont keep it! the 6. 2 diesels are like a Ram 3500 dually powered by a Hemi..... a black eye!!

or just say no and keep your eyes open for a deal

-10*? Better park close to an outlet. The old V8 diesels suck in that respect. They don't like to start in the summer without cycling the glowplugs once for sure, unless it was run recently and still a bit warm. The grid heaters on the Cummins are MUCH more reliable and work better than GPs.

83 Gmc

I have an 83 GMC 2WD 6. 2L D with 250000 miles on it. Bought it used with about 40000 miles on it. Have NEVER TOUCHED the engine except for changing oil (Rotella 15/40) approx every 5000 miles. I have replaced 3 fuel pumps though.

That being said ... I basically agree with the other posts. The 6. 2 is a very reliable engine but could not pull a dead cat across the road. Mine is a 4 spd manual and geared pretty high. That makes it a ***** to get going in 1st gear. Clutch chatters like hell & every new driver that gets in it kills the engine the first time he tries it.

So ... long story short ... the 6. 2 is very durable, especially if the prior owner took care of it. MPG is pretty good but it's a wash at the differential between gas and diesel prices now. More important ... it won't pull jack**** and if you put much weight in the back ... you have to downshift a couple of times going up any kind of a decent hill. Not sure how an auto transmission compensates for this.

If I were you ... I'd pass.

Auto doesn't help any either. It'll pull OK in direct, but O/D is out of the question, even with a light load.

I had a '82 F250 with the 400 V8 (last year they were used), and I could out pull a 6. 2. HP is about the same between the 2. We were both pulling a roll of drainage tile. Mine was a full roll and the other was maybe 3/4. Not real heavy, but plenty of wind resistance. In O/D, the 6. 2 couldn't go over 45mph, and smoked like crazy. Got tired of following it, so I put the hammer down and passed it.

On the flip side, the 6. 2 got 20 mpg vs my 11-12mpg.
