1987 Mercedes 190D Turbo

I picked this rare bird up in February. The front and rear suspension has all been replaced over the past few months. Injection pump has been sealed and lots of little things. I'll post some more pics later.

Wow. That is certainly a rare bird. I've only seen one other and it belonged to a customer. It was a black market car which was a popular thing in the 80's. it had the thin bumpers, h4 lamps and all and no EPA/ emission stickers anywhere. I could only get an oil filter for it locally, so I called Ray Catena Benz, and they were interested in hearing the VIN. When I got to a certain digit halfway the guy yelled over the phone "YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSE TO HAVE THAT CAR!" And hung up on me.
Of course this was before the Internet and searches were real hard. I couldn't do much more for him.

I've heard several numbers on how many were imported. 1,200, 1,300, 1,349 and less then 5,000. So I'm guessing with the 1,349.

I'll be tracking the Eurolamps soon enough. I found the wiring for it and picked it up already.

When the Wife first became the wife and moved in with me in So Calif she needed a car that didn't have rust from headlight ring to taillight ring the one she had as a first car didn't make the trip with her moving from Montana.



Told her to find one she came up with a 1960 Mercedes Benz 180D 4 speed on the column and a whopping 40 something HP 4 cylinder Diesel, She drove the Crap out of that thing you could hear her car coming from 3 blocks away and SMOKE!!!! it made my truck with a turned up Cat motor look like something the EPA would have loved to have rather than her Mercedes, Didn't burn a drop of oil ran like a top. Got a job driving for someone other than me, one of the mechanics was a factory trained Mercedes wrench. I used it to go to work one day he went NUTS when I pulled in the yard just slobbering all over the thing. It was cherry nice everything the wife kept that car until just a few years before we retired she sold it to the mechanic I thought he was going to cry about it. When the wife would take the kids to school they wanted out of the car a few blocks from the school, they didn't want to be seen in the KGB car :-laf

I also have one ,i bought new in 1987,it is almost as fast as my 03 dodge,

I had a 190D with a 4 speed stick (IIRC)
It was a good car but had so many miles on it I was afraid it would let me down.
Sold it to the BIL who drove it from Fl to Ca 2x's.

Edit: MIne was not a turbo.
