1989-1990 Cummins LTA10 engine oil spec

Thanks, TDR Staff

Great info on oils, rust protection, threadlockers, etc

CI4 & CI4+ oil is still alive and well

I am trying to determine the correct oil spec for this engine. Have just over 1,190hrs on it. Napa suggested Delo 400 15-40w. But I'm not so sure.

Any help be much appreciated.

Charles

Hi Charles,
You can’t just barge in here telling us you have a vintage L10 with 1100 hours on it and just leave! :) So what’s the story?
I agree. Get the oldest spec Dino 15/40 and you’ll be fine.

My bad...unique set up here. I have a 1990 Mercedes Benz Unimog U1200 with the venerable OM352a. In collaboration with Schmidt Engineering back in the days...this snowblower was sold to DuPage Airport in Illinois. They used it for heavier snow removal. Let's just say its bigger than your typical Ace Hardware snow blower. The snowblower is powered by a 89/90 Cummins LTA10. Yes it only has 1190 hrs. More to the story....About 8 years ago...I came to Montana to work at a job...the gentleman said he needed a person who could work on it....right up my alley. So when I arrived he had 2 snowblowers. An older Oshkosh with Cat power and crab steer with a Sicard head....and the Unimog with the Wasau TS-4 head. Both units could move over 3000tons an hour.

So 5 years later I moved on....I put the Unimog in storage....played it up. Fluids/filters all changed.

23rd of December...a decision was made to bring "Bumblebee" back into my possession. Needless to say I was thrilled.

Here are some pics. The unit weighs in at 25,300lbs.

Wow! For a Snow fighter it's in really nice shape.
Just got done yesterday...using a hot water pressure washer to do a bit of cleaning. I'll get her back to the way I remember.

If you think that's a beast...during my time with this world class company...they purchased a Oshkosh MP2518. All Silver Detroit power. 6v92a for the truck engine and a marine rated 8V92TTA...750hp. Twin turbo/intercooled and supercharged. The HETT is the same way just not a twin. Anyways...they bought it with no head. I was able to procure a low hour TS-5 head for it. It will eat 6,000tons per hour. I throw some pics up shortly.

Regarding oil...when you say Dino 15/40 is that a old term for a brand of oil?

I'm pretty sure I used a Delvac 15/40 before I put it to bed...or maybe synthetic....any reason to think Delo and Delvac are different besides one possibly being a synthetic?

Thanks

Charles, that’s fantastic! So you were able to walk away with this beauty when you left?
I’m a sucker for snow equipment so you have my attention!

I apologize. Dino oil means conventional moor oil.

Since I work for the DSNY, I’m involved with snow. Before my time we had Sicards too, but the operators would fill up the entire first floor of a building by blowing out the windows of said building as they went along the curb. Then they tried a wheel loader mounted blower called a Frink, that had Cummins C8.3 power of its own. They did the same with that.
Now we just haul it away and melt it at a location. We have Trecan PD60 and 135 melters. I’m on a team that runs either.

Very nice. I always thought a melter would do well in town here. Very nice.

Thanks, and they are very effective. Good for any town center, you just need a way to digest the water, and a healthy fuel budget.

Have a question....I noticed the LTA 10 with 1100+ hrs on it smokes alot. Ive noticed that oil is skowly dripping from the exhaust pipe at the flange just before the muffler....so I did some investigating. Thinking I was having a bad seal in the turbo. With the turbo off...I noticed the same on the exhaust port of the turbo. The exhaust flange is pretty black and has some residual. Problems? Wrong oil? Sitting around too long? Stuck valve? Rings?

How does itnrun. Very well. No loping...smooth idiling. Starts right up.

Wet Stacking. Ive heard of it. Anything I should be looking at while its running?

Yes it is. Its a 1993 M1070. (Doing some rehab on the interior of the cab.) Air seats and sound deadening ect and changing up the center storage box. More like getting rid of it. May add a 3rd air set next to the passenger. Well see.

Unimog update. Giving it thorough work over. Both engines....Filter/fluids ect. New belts and hoses. New Michelin 365 85r20 XZL tires. Changing out the clutch slave cylinder. Going through inspecting the hydraulic system ect. Had a lft cylinder rebuilt. Rear calipers getting rebuilt.

Thats a quick overview.

Bottom picture is a 64 Unimog Chassis.

I have 2 sets of beadlock rims. Aluminum and steel.

NIB AC KIT for the Oshkosh. Maybe ill get around installing it some day...lol

Wet stacking is when diesels idle too much and combustion temps get so low that the fuel won’t fully burn. It goes out into the exhaust and sometimes out the stack and dribbles down. Hence “wet stacking”. Older Mack’s are famous for leaking at the head/ manifold. I’m sure that pre emission L10 is very capable of wet stacking. It just needs a good flogging.
