dakota ctd?

What do you think? A good candidate for a cummins swap?

Hey all. Its been quite a while since I posted some pics and now finally my conversion is complete... well 95% anyway... I still have some bugs to work out and a bunch of saftey stuff to do yet for pulling (loops, air shut off and stuff like that)and also put my twins on.

Anyway, here is the list of mods that were done!

The truck was originaly as follows-

1989 CK-style Reg-Cab, 2 wheel drive Dually

350 gasser

Turbo400 transmission

Dana70 Rear

Power Nothing

Needed TONS of body work

Here is the list of mods just off the top of my head!

Crew-Cab (stretched frame, bought a wrecked cab, spliced my firewall to it (wrecked cab had fire wall pushed in to far) Cab was a 1999 and had new interior and leather seats... power everything and all wiring I needed)

4x4 conversion- I used my coil sprung 2wd frame. Put a Dodge D60 under it, reworked all the mounts to work with a set of 2005 Ford Trailing arms. I located a custom Panhard Bar behind the diff instead of in front because of frame clearence. I also removed alot out of the crossmember but re-enforced it with 1/4" and looks better than stock and is stronger. I also put a ARB locker in the front diff.

Transmission/T-case - I used a 2003 Dodge 6-speed and a 1998 Dodge NP241 HD. The clutch is a Haisley Machine Dual Disk Competition Puller!!! The rear drive shaft is now a single shaft (84" long!!!) 4" heavy wall tubing.

The rear axle is GMC 11. 5" AAM dually axle with a few goodies!

The engine is of course a 5. 9 Cummins. Custom built by Haisley Machine in Indiana. It is 14mm studded (stock is 12mm), Dual fire-ringed! Custom ground cam shaft, Custom flycut low comp pistons, Ballanced and blueprinted, Fluidampr, Studded bottom end and girdled! and a whole bunch more. The P7100 pump has a custom cam, Plungers and Barrels bored to 13MM from 12mm. A 5000rpm gov kit,Haisley 5x18's injectors!!!! Custom stainless lines and a hole bunch more! I also have Twins for the truck (not setup yet) They are a HTT Sled-Puller 66 with a custom wastegate and the large turbo is custom by HTT also. I had a HT3B/26 but they put some #'s together for me after my pump was built and figured it was to small. As for an idea of what the pump flows... I had them detune it to 750cc's @ 1000stroke per minute/4500rpm. I also have a Snow Preformance kit that I have yet to put on and a Haisley AUX fuel kit for my fuel needs.

I also used a 6. 5L rad for the conversion and a 2004 Duramax Intercooler. The rad fits amazingly into the D-Max IC. Now fitting the IC to the rad support was another story but I made it work! My rad support looks just like it did stock... nice and clean looking and everything works! I don't have any pictures of it yet other than the one posted but in a few weeks when I setup my twin turbo's I have to pull the rad again so I will snap some pictures.

What else... . Alcoa wheels, 3. 5" Goodmark Cowl Hood

Oh... and probaby about 6000 Hours of work... felt like that anyway!!! and you have no idea how much $$$$

As far as the suspension goes. Its a Dodge 60 like stated above. I had just had to do some minor changes to the brackets to make the Ford Trailing arms work and it seems to work great! I also used the stock GM 2wd springs but had to use a set of shocks from a 1980's style ford just because they have a different mount on the bottom than the GM style did! It turned out great for using all stock pieces and its a nice clean look!

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask!!!!

Thanks... RyanB

More pictures-

As far as that large K&N goes... . Im only running it untill I get my twin setup done and I needed a filter fast so I could get the truck done for my wedding June 17th... it was the only thing I could get at the time!!!! I have a nice AFE for the twins now :)

That thing's gorgeous. If chevy ever decides to made a real truck again... They should copy yours.

You're getting married tomorrow and you get to drive that thing. Lucky man. Make sure someone video tapes the wedding, just in case you're thinking about the truck the whole time.

LOL, actually I got married almost 2 months ago already... June 17th and I got the truck finally finished up the night before at 11pm and got to take it for its first test drive!!!! the next morning (day of the wedding) I was wrapping up on the little stuff... fuel filler neck and putting on the tail gate! I have a video of the trucks leaving the wedding... I will post it if I can. I didn't do a burnout... just alot of black smoke but my brother did a nice one with his 97!!!

As far as the hood goes... . its amazing how some say the same as you Forest and others say... WOW that is way better than stock! I personally like the cowl hood alot better and I needed a new hood anyway and this one wasn't much more tha a true GM stock hood!

it's just a personal taste thing... if you dig it, that's all that matters... I'm just saying that's the ONLY thing I can nit on that truck

never been a fan of cowl hoods... especially if they're not functional... I like stuff to look factory

Actually my brother has one on his 97 Dodge and with his custom airbox and AFE filter he noticed almost a 100-150 degree drop in egt's when he put on the cowl. Both of ours have the open are in the back of the hood and with his it really seemed to help... not sure if everyone would experiance that but his with the open filter area it helped.

Any others with a cowl experianced this?

Ryan, the truck looks great! Is there any way you could post up pics of the interior and a pic like the very first one you posted but with the mirror flipouts down?

That is one of the best looking Cummins powered vehicles I've seen. I like the look of that vintage GM (WITH the cowl hood!), especially in black. If you ever want to sell that thing (minus the big $$ motor) let me know! That would be an awesome driver.

I really like how you set up the front axle. Was this just a mix of parts, or how did you put it all together.

Nice rig.

If you click on this link https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159246 it will take you to pictures of the rolling chassis and you can get a better idea of how it all went together there! This wasn't an easy thing to do but it was certainly ALOT cheaper than what others said it was going to be to convert a truck to 4x4. I have only put on about 50miles so far on the truck but the truck is amazingly smooth and drives straight as an arrow!

As far as how I came up with the idea... after looking at my frame, the dodge D60 and the dodge bracketry I realized there was no way it was going to work and look stock so I started looking at the fords with there new trailing arms on the 2004+ trucks and realized it would work and look how I wanted it. I also knew that all the parts would be stock and everything would fit together. After more home work and thinking about how I was going to make it went together rather easy and I am very happy how it turned out!

Anymore questions just ask away!

When I first started reading about your collection of parts I was thinking "this is going to be a cluster". Wow was I wrong. Very impresive!!! Count me in on the cowl hood.

very nice conversion, you pulled it off very well. wish I could see it in person, and you must have a very understanding wife or significant other!

About the mirrors- one day I was working on my truck and a guy in town here drove up to the bar across the street from me in a 2001 with his towing mirrors flipped up. I had seen those mirrors many times but never up close so I went to look at them. Upon close inspection the body lines looked very close to the 88-98 GMC's. Turns out sitting right beside this truck was a 95 cab&chassis dodge with the big steel west cost mirrors that bolt to the doors. He had a set of Dodge filler panels covering the stock mirror location. I also had a set of these mirror filler panels for my Super Stock 4x4 gasser pull truck I was building at the time because I didn't want to run mirrors on it. So I went back over to the house and got my filler panels. Walked back over to the 95 and put mine against his and... ... ..... to my amazement they were almost 100% identical!

I then bought a set of towing mirrors off of e-bay and after looking at them all that was needed was to re-drill 3 holes and modify the supplied bracket you get with the mirror kit! I then just had to do some minor sanding to the mirror with a D/A sander to match the profile of the GM door... they worked great.

Here are some close up pics for you all!

Oh, some of those pics are also of a set on my dads 1993 Chevy that he has that I put them on... big difference with those mirrors pulling his 102" wide Lund Boat/trailer now!

Here is one picture I just got today from my Aunt of my truck. It was from the wedding with just the guys and the truck (had just finished it hours before!!!)
