cummins in 05 f350

Parts needed

Here is my 1990 chevy suburban 4x4 2500. It has the following in it.

1989 cummins 12 valve reman about 30,000 miles

nv5600 6 speed rebuilt by standard transmission

np205 transfer case

gear vendors overdrive unit reman.

lots of other goodies as well.

I just got back from a trip to Lake powell and we were loaded down with the family towing out 21 foot day cruiser loaded to the gills with equipment, kids, supplies etc. This truck is awesome i averaged 15mpg for the whole trip with the ac blasting. . My gear vendor unit went out just as i was leaving powell still in utah or i would have gotten better mileage i am sure. Anyways just thought i would show off my new to me cummins suburban i started collecting parts about 2 years ago and i have been driving it about 6 months. Soon to have a hx35 turbo and a bhaf and a custom air intake horn. Oo. Oo. :D I will try and post some pics hopefuly it will work.

OMG i love it. i'm building an 88. hope everyhting worked out well for the swap. i'm sure i'll have a million questions... . looking good tho!

I wish you good luck with your conversion. I will never look back to a gasser after having the power of the cummins in my suburban. :D After looking at your suburban in the signature i only ask are you going to change the gears in the rear end to say a 3. 73 or 3. 55?

Looks like mine a lot same engine I got 4:11s and will run either 33's or 35's

Why do you need a overdrive on top of a 6spd with 273's or 355's

How did you run your fuel line ? but looks good ,what type of mounts did you use and the slave cylender set up

You don't need to run an od unit i just had one so it went it. If i'm just running in 6th gear alone 65-70 mph is about it, i mean don't get me wrong i can go 80 mph if i want but i can really hear the engine turning rpm. I have 3. 73 gears in the rear and i have 33 inch tires. And if i am pulling a trailer i just use the regual 6 speed and it works great or 5th gear od :D

the dana 60 and the rear end came with 456s that's why she's got them for now. i'm in college and paying for college so trucks comes after college (yes sad) and i'm not quite ready to drop the C in yet, gotta save up for a transmission and the odds and ends... so while i'm still running the 6. 2L GW (345K miles and counting!) i'm gonna stick to what i got. when i get the big C in, things will change i'm sure.

Im getting ready to do the same setup in an 87 chevy truck. I have a few q's. Did you have to make another engine and transmission crossmember? And how much body lift was required. These are the main burning questions that i have. Thanks in advance. Ryan

On the earlier question ,no need for a body lift , suspention ,at least 4"

Any body know on the t-case speedo drive ,what to do , use the dodge gear , minus the electronic generator , or since i do have an actual GM gear train i can rob peices from use the gm t case drive gear for the speedo

also how is your fuel lines ran ?

You must notch the front engine crossmember for clearance. You must remove and build a new #2 crossmember. I used a 1" hockey puck body lift, (cheap), for clearance of my Duramax intercooler. You can get by without the body lift. Below is a link of my build.

How much modification is required to fit a D-max IC in there, will a grille fit over the IC?? Thanks Ryan

I used a 2003 Duramax radiator and intercooler. Flipped the intercooler upside down and had the left nipple cut off and welded at an angle so the radiator would fit back between the nipples. I cut the old extended mounts from the intercooler. I welded 3/8 studs to the bottom of the rad support and used rubber bushings in the intercooler mount holes. I cut holes in the upper rad support for the intercooler studs to protrude through. The intercooler has mid mount holes that I used by cutting holes in the rad support and used rubber bushing with a bolt and flat washer. I slotted one side of all the mount holes to allow for intercooler expansion. Since the intercooler hung below the rad support I had to use hockey pucks for a body lift and had to rig up a new brace to the upper hood latch area. Slight notching was required on the grille.

The truck does not have A/C but I might add it later by using a universal condenser in the open space between the I/C and radiator.

A Ford or Dodge I/C may be easier to install but I like the large size of the GM and I got it cheap.
