Just wondering what everyone’s opinion is on the weight I can tow with my IC 91 5spd, 3.54 gears, 100hp injectors, pump mods, 16cm turbo housing. My concern is that it was made in the time when some 91’s were still being made with the 6in frame instead of 8 inch so I’m not so sure how it will stand up against a heavy load. Truck has excellent brakes and rears have big shoes and wheel cylinders. All my trailers have excellent brakes

Wouldn’t that be on your door sticker? Never mind on edit your asking towing weight not GVW. In your case I would try to find the orignal specs and stay within that or go by a percentage over it.

Oh, it would likely handle 20-25k GCVW without issue. Stopping on the other hand could be problematic and without more air and those gears it will be HOT!

Better question, what do you need to tow for weight.

My goal is to be able to haul 8000 lb trailer and 2 tractors (10000lb) for total weight 18000lb

What is your truck? That is on the heavy side for a 250/350 SRW. You will need a dually, preferably a cab chassis. 4x2/4x4, tire size/capacity?

4x4 250 heavy duty load range F tires

I’ve seen mupltiple people on forums saying they’ve pulled 20000+ no problem with srw so I don’t know what to think

That is over the rating of my 2015 3500 4x4 SRW truck with Aisin transmission, which is about 2 or 3 times more truck than you have.

However because to the Cummins engine you often see people towing some amazing loads with 1st gen trucks. I know that my 1993 W250 lacked braking big time. While you are doing the turbo be sure to install an exhaust brake.

So if I can get the load stopped the rest of the truck will be safe u think? I may put some aggressive pads in the front to make some more braking effect

The trailer should stop itself.

I’d be most worried about the pin weight and what the frame/suspension can handle. Pin weight will be around 4K lbs.

I got a ‘92 D250 Auto Extended Cab Long Bed from a member here that had a bit over 300K miles on it mostly pulling a 28’ Jayco 5th wheel camper. It’s been in 48 states, including three trips to Alaska. I think I remember him saying the 5th wheel was 6800lb dry. He had the A518 built, two under-bed transmission coolers, and converted the rear axle to disc brakes. The engine was tuned by PDR and put down 308/670 on Suncoast’s dyno.

I used to haul 16k of hay on a 4500 lb trailer with an 01 3/4 ton single wheel 4x4, made 5 trips to Utah and back to Tx.... 2300 miles round trip , no problems hauling that much.

I haul loads like that too with my '01, but the 2nd. gen has way more beef than the 1st gen. I try to stay in the 20-22k GCW range with my '91 D-250, 5spd, stock tires, air bags, Pac Brake and engine mods.

Where do you intend to tow? Mountains? Flat land? High altitude? Low altitudes? You have way too much injector and not enough air or gear to handle grades and\or high altitude. You will be down shifting and crawling in any kind of long hard pull just to keep the EGT's anywhere near normal, more likely skirting the max on anything but flatland under 3000 feet.

You will need 4.10's and a taller tire to make road speed unless you intend to drive 55 all the time. You also will need a cooler on the trans or it will melt down, usually at the most in opportune time. At 18k you are pushing the limits of reason, at over 20k with that setup it will be a problem.

No high altitude towing but on rare occasion moderately hilly towing. Truck has 33 tires. I’ve towed some lighter loads going 60 and 55 and it was like nothing was behind me. Also pulled a 12k big a** fifth wheel camper no problem that’s why if figured 18 would be about max. Truck turns 21-2200 at 75. 17-1800 at 55-60. I’m sure that I will have to downshift and/or slow down on big hills. Not expecting it to pull like a brand new Cummins with 900lbs of torque
