1991 electrical completely DEAD

My father in law has a 91 3/4 ton CTD. He has used it as a work truck for his construction company.

Last Feb, the electrical went completely dead. He has left it in his const. yard and hasnt tried messing with it.

He gets no juice to all of the dash and no power to the ign. key. He can crank it by crossing the starter, but it wont start.

Is there some fuseable link to check or something?

He has two other CTD's that run great , so he really has not had to use it anyway, but now has a job comming up.

Any clues where to start would be great. Thanks in advance. Ed

Is your truck a 1991. 5 or a older one? if it is factory intercooled it is a 1991. 5. Check the main hot wire a the battery(not the starter cable) make sure the coupler(about a foot from the battery) is connected. There is also a couple fuse links just down from the battery, check those too. And do not forget the battery connectors and grounds. It would be a good idea to clean all connections.

Does he still have headlights or is EVERYTHING dead?

When he cranks it by jumping across the starter selenoid, is he using jumper cables from another battery? Could be the battery took a complete dump with a short or something. If no juice is getting to the switch, I don't think it will start since the fuel selenoid doesn't have any signal telling it to turn on the fuel. Take a voltmeter and start checking from the battery to see how far the power goes.

Paccool, everything is dead. . No power to any switches. . Battery is full.

I'm gonna prod around this weekend and see what happens.

Hopefully by then some other poor soul who had the same problem will give me the "magic" answer! Wishfull thinking when it comes to electrical. #ad
 
If you look behind the battery there is a Black box this contains the trucks "brain" If the connection comes loose from the battery(has its own cable) it will do that. Or it is shot. Im not sure how but there is a way to bypass it. The truck only needs it to operate the antilock brakes I think. You can live without those I'm sure. It operates all electrical funtions but like I said theres a way to bypass I'm just not sure how. If you do figure it out I'd like to know.

There are TWO different wiring harness in 1991, 89-91 and 91. 5-93. The earlier 91 does not have a computer behind the battery and is a NONintercooled Cummins. The rear ABS computer is located behind the glove box, not under the hood. The computer behind the battery on the 91. 5 controls the cruise control, the alternator, and a few other things as well. If you have the older wiring harness, let me know and I will try to give you a hand. By the way the older 91s have a lot simpler wiring harness, and will be easier to trouble shoot #ad

hey... my 1993 d250 today did it again... {for about the 3rd time in a year} it had cab lights but the dash and ignition was dead, but for only like 2 minutes and the started up..... what the heck?

Okay, it's completely dead now..... i still get headlights/windows/door locks/buzzer/and dome light... no radio... dashlights... info. center... . won't crank at all! i've tried all the above information nothing works. . tryed all fuses nothing! i need help. . need to get back to work, already missed 2 days
