Q: using 2 micron fuel filter as a bypass lube oil filter???

Broken Local Duramax

Hello,

I'm putting a 6BT in my M715 - I have a chance of getting one from a 91 Ram, or one from a 95. Besides being one being intercooled, what differences are there between the two? Can I intercool the 91 with its stock turbo and injection pump?

Thank you.

Mikel

The injection pump. The VE pump used on the '91 is very limited in potential performance. The P7100 pump used on the '95 can be made into a powerhouse with relatively cheap mods. Both are very reliable.

Thank you. I found a 95 6BT with a 150K miles at a junkyard for $1400, but it has no turbo or accessories (pump is there). I'm afraid the missing stuff is going to nickle and dime me to death :{

How much for the two engines? You could get the front gearcase from the '95, and its P7100, and put them on the '91. May be cheaper to buy a complete used and running P-pumped engine, though.

The head on the intercooled engines are a little better. The holes for the injector bodies is smaller, and the head is less prone to cracking.

The VE pump on the '91 can still make some great power. IIRC, bgilbert put something like 450hp to the ground at IRP with his. Just takes a little more effort/coin.

The '91 can be intercooled the same as the '95. Either with a charge-air-cooler like the late '91-current engines, or you can get a water-to-air cooler that was used on some of the ag/industrial applications. It replaces the top plate on the air intake on the head. Will also require the use of the high pressure fuel injection lines that go around the cooler. Would onlt need to run coolant lines to it, and a different pipe from the turbo that goes to the cooler.

Sounds like a great project. Have fun. :) Post pictures. :D

Price is more or less comparable, but the 91 includes the turbo and accessories and has more miles. Is the P7100 worth the extra hassle?

I wouldn't be too concerned with miles unless it's like 400k-500k and or hasn't been serviced for last xxxx miles etc. What accessories are missing? Typically a donor truck can be had from an individual for about the same price as an engine from either an individual or junkyard. I wouldn't get all worked up over the p7100 unless it was from a manual truck and a 180 or 215 pump. I'd take a VE over a 160 p-pump, suit on. Are both these possible purchases just engine only?

I would have to agree. Really depends on how much power you want. Unless you want over 500, I wouldn't bother with switching to a P-pump. A VE pump is a good one as well.
