There is a 1993 3/4 ton long bed with a cummins here at the local stealer... It looks to be factory intercooled... it has an exhaust brake and it has the gertrag 5 speed with 4. 10's...

It looks to be very clean, was supposedly owned by a diesel mechanic who traded it in for a newer one...

the dealer wants $9999.

So, a couple questions...

1. Is that a good price? (I think it is. )

2. How many of the first gen's were factory intercooled?

3. How much would ring and pinions or new axles with 3. 55's or 3. 08's cost? (I don't like 4. 10's. )

4. What would be the RPM of this truck at 65 currently in overdrive? In direct? (didn't get to drive it. )

Thanks a bunch, my friend is really interested in this truck...

(Trying to convert him. :D )

I have 93 it is factory intercooled.

It did have 410 and now have 354 and like much better but could live with 410 if had to

good all around truck

All 93's were intercooled.

RPM's at 65 MPH in OD with a 235/85R16 tire would be approximately 2150... give or take 25 RPM. In 4th gear, the RPM's would jump to about 2800 at 65 MPH.

An axle swap would be expensive (to get 3. 08's), but probably not any more so than getting a gear swap done. The problem with the axle swap is finding a donor vehicle. I would expect gears, labor, and a new case or locker for front/rear (if 4x4) to run about $750-$1500 per axle. If it's a 4x2, you might consider putting in a Dana 80 from a wrecked newer Dodge. From what I understand, you can go as low as a 3. 23 ratio for that axle.

Another option is to get a Gear Vendors overdrive unit.

Just curious, but how many miles does it have on it? I would love to have a truck like that as mine is an automatic. I think that it is a fair price if the truck has under 150K on it. Also, have you tried the four wheel drive? Check the hubs and make sure the front u-joints don't bind when you turn. Hope that helps a little.

If you try a gear swap. The 3:08's takes a special carrier and housing. So do not buy them if you want to keep the housing you have under your truck. Any ratio other than the 3:08's will fit your housing. So gear swap would be the cheapest way probably.

I had to replace the axle (3:08's) under my truck. It took 6 months to find one. Plus it was $1500 plus shipping.

A 80 series would be a good swap into your truck. Time to head to the dealer with a tape measure. :D

I have never driven a turck with 308 in it before, but I would think that would be very high for a truck with overdrive in it. Just my unknowing opinion. I love my 3:55 , and have driven a truck with 4:10 are very slow. If you like tall trucks have you considered running maybe 36" tires or so with the 4:10s?? Just on option.

Also on gears, 4 wheeler wholesalers has ring and pinions, just the gears for $160 for dana 60 and dana 70.

You will need new carrier for the front, and probably for the rear to go from 4:10 to 3:55 and I would suggest a good limited slip for the rear end, an open in the rear just plain sucks. They don't have price breakdowns in the magazine I have, prolly lookin at $300 to $400 for a good limited slip. Then a diff bearing kit for a 70 will prolly run you $100, to 150 or so.

My opinion If I could buy the truck I would just change the ring and pinions and carriers with new bearings, but I am a mechanic by trade and setting up differential don't scare me, just takes patience!

I have 3. 08's in my 89 2 4x2 auto truck with a gear vendor and love the cruise, 1950 at 75 mph

on my 93 with 5 speed and 3. 08's 1800 at 75 mph

The price sounds reasonable to me.

As to the diffs - I had the rear end on my 2 wheel drive rebuilt about a year ago. They took out 4:10's and put in 3. 55's, new carrier and pinion bearings, rebuilt the limited slip as the clutch packs were toast. Cost $825. I considered doing it myself but didn't feel comfortable as I had not done one and wanted it set up right. The 3. 55's really made a difference at highway speed and helped with towing my 6K travel trailer. Now I can take it out of OD and still run 65 MPH up a hill.

The only time I see the 3:08's being a problem is if I try to tow over 7K. Then I am limited on on the speed I can run. I run out of motor at 75 with my 3:08's at 7K. Need mo power. :D

Thanks for all the help, guys, that's pretty cheap for a ring and pinion. I've set them up before, that would be no problem...

I'll pass this info along...

So a new carrier is needed to go from 4. 10's to 3. 55's? I was thinking it would only be needed if I was going to 3. 08's... hmmm

thanks for all the help... .

BTW- this truck would barely do 75 in overdrive... With the 4. 10's, it seemed like you had to shift all the time...

Ok I guess maybe I didn't have all the facts right. It was always knowledge to me for a dana 60, the carrier was different in the higher gears up to about 3:73 then the carriers were differnt from 3:73 on up because of the difference in the pinion diameter. A pinion for a 3:55 is larger then a 4:10. Sorry that I have led you astray!

Throttle linkage

The other day I goosed it to get moving and my throttle linkage decided to become two pieces rather than the usual one piece. It had been holding on by about a half of a thread. After turning it back on about 5 or 6 turns and tightening the lock nut, it seemed to have a lot more get up and go than before. If yours is kind of mediocre on scat. Shorten that linkage and see what happens. This one ton is for sale 125000 mi, auto, Banks quick turbo and exhaust. 93 standard cab.

Guys, you can't just fiddle with the throttle linkage length. It has to be set properly for something called "breakover".

I'll attach a link to a previous post I made showing this.

If your throttle is not opening fully then you may need to "convince" the gas Peddle arm to pull further by bending it slightly.

First, check out you breakover setting. We can go from there... .
