Hi, im posting this question for a friend. The truck is a 93 ram 2500 4x4 automatic. Yesterday he pulled the shift lever down to put the truck in gear, and there was nothing there, the shifter moves with no reaction from the trans. So he checked the obvious, and everything on the outside is working. The shift lever does not click between gears at all, it just moves free. Any idea on what might have happened inside, or how to fix the problem. I think the trans is a 4spd with o/d 727??

Thanks for any help,

kevin mott

If you don't feel any clicks or detents between gears, and the external linkage is all moving and connected, the linkage has problem fallen apart on the valve body.

If the shifter is still connected and moving the shift tower lever and you can't feel the detents, I would guess the shift lever broke inside the transmission, you will have to pull the valve body to see if that is the problem. If the "park" feature sill works then the shifter is probably still ok. bg

If it stays in Park, there is a strong posibility that the "arm" that goes from the shifter rod to the valve body shaft has come loose. While there is a "straight" cut on that arm, it is posible it has moved up off the shaft and is just slipping.

Have him move the lever while you look at it.

But please, block the wheels so it cannot roll.
