Im looking at buying a 2nd gen Ram and im well aware of the door rot problem. My question is does anyone here have a tried and proven meythod of preventing this if I were to replace a set of rusted doors with a new set and have them repainted.

as a guy who spent 31 years in NW PA, the best recommendation I could give you is to move to Texas:-laf

I think the rot problem is more related to how the owner cares for the truck. My 97 spent 11 years up there without even a trace of rust on the doors. The previous owner kept it real clean... cleaner than I have...

Hey Rob,

Many people use that spray on bedliner stuff on the bottom parts of their trucks with good success.

Good luck with the new truck.

Yeah. Seal the bottom door seams INSIDE and out. Bedliner-type stuff on the outside and self-healing, penetrating rustproofing inside. Keep your window seals in good, soft condition. Running boards really protect that rocker and door bottom area from tire-sprayed rain, slush, salt, rocks, etc. too.

Do NOT neglect to give the rocker panels the same treatment. Make sure the drain holes in both doors and rockers are unobstructed, too.

+1 to all the above, especially SRath. Keep those drain holes unobstructed. Both my '97 and '01 never had a problem.

You can also remove the bolt at the bottom of the front fenders right in front of the door and clean out the trash that has accumulated there.

Only place that I have appreciable rust on my truck is the rotting out driver door bottom. I live in michigan where they try to turn the lakes into saltwater every year with the amount of road salt they throw during the winter.

My truck was Ziebarted since new and reapplied every year, seals are good and drains are open and free. Paint is blistered and rust is present! Atleast Zibart has a warranty, maybe I'll get a new door that will last another 7 years!

My passenger side door is perfect!

Oh well, I bought it for the engine anyways :-laf.

JCyrbok,

Where do you get your Zeibart reapplied each year?

The first thing I did after buying my Texas Dodge was to have it Zeibarted. They promptly went belly up and closed their doors after 30 or 40 years or more... So much for my annual touchups and my warranty...

I thought Zeibart went belly up Nationwide?

There is a local Zibart about 10 minutes from my house. All the paperwork is Ziebart, warranty info is Ziebart. Maybe they have individually owned fanchises? I know the place I go also does spray bedliners, windshields and other stuff like that, but even their sign says Ziebart.

I dont know, the individual franchies is the only thing I can think of. Heres a link to Ziebart. Ziebart International :: Welcome to Ziebart.com and this the one that I go to. Ziebart International :: except the building doesnt look like that one in the pic.

Rob. .

The gentleman who did mine took the doors apart and sprayed them with a rust inhibitor paint that turned black when dry(kinda like POR15). He soaked them inside until it dripped out of the seams and left the doors open overnight to drain and dry. He then went and made sure the drains were free and clear and reinstalled the panels and then shot the outside also. You can not even tell he did the work and he even blended the paint in to match. Also ordered at the time was a new pair of the seals which seem to get nasty on the door tops and help seal the water out. They are still on back order from Ma Mopar and I am hoping for them before the truck show.

A small Thread Hijack,Thanks Bob

If anyone has any Doors (more so the driverside) I need them for my 99

BTW Bob Andys truck is for sale:)

Andy did you find a Puller??

Andy did you find a Puller??

Nope.....

Nothing locally yet. Going to Schied's this year and will snoop around some.

I have heard Yost has his 3rd genner for sale, not seen it yet..... Andy

BTW...

We BOTH know Bob would never slug the jukebox to dance the floor to buy my truck... ... . LOL... ... Andy

FLynes...

I haven't really sat down to think about it actually yet. I am having a tough time finding the truck I want to replace it as most seem to have eneded up down South and out West. I guess the easiest way to do this would be to tell those interested to make me an offer, but, for them to realize I do know what I have and what I have in it. Its not easy to find one this clean and this well maintained so I am not just going to give it away... ... ... Andy
