A couple of years ago my ignition key stopped working and it was switched by the mechanic while I was having some front end work done. So now I have two keys one for the door and 1 for the ignition. I still have the original key cylinder that has a busted end. Is it possible to disassemble the actual key cylinders themselves and swap the tumblers? My Mopar shop manual only covers removal and replacement of the key cylinder as a complete unit. I’d rather not pay and wait for a locksmith if I can do it myself.
Thanks
Craig

Yes, it can be done, but it is rather meticulous. A good deal of care must be taken to keep the brass tumblers in the correct location. Personally, I'd suggest disassembly on a clean work bench, and in order of removal. My big fingers make it difficult to work all of them correctly, but it can be done. If you need glasses, I suggest a good pair and lots of light.

Thanks, the next question would be how does it come apart. As I mentioned, the original Dodge shop manual for the truck does not include disassembly of the key cylinder.

It has been a while.... but with the key in it to prevent bending and loss of the brass tumblers, there is a metal plate at the rear with a spring loaded pin under it... removing that allows the whole tumbler assembly to come out the front, IF I recall that correctly.... I'll try to look tomorrow afternoon and see if I have one sitting around to look at....
