Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 1997 Dodge 3500 Electrical Problem

I have a intermittent electrical ? problem that is driving me crazy. While driving at most any speed, all of a sudden my tach goes either to zero and stays there or jumps erratically from about 2000 RPM to 0 repeatedly. The ammeter reading drops to negative and sometimes it feels like the truck has a loss of power. This problem persists for a few minutes and then stops. I have had it into repair shops in my area and since it will not repeat for them they have been unable to do anything. No codes are thrown on the computer. Any ideas?

Probably bad speed sensor on the vibration dampner

Check for loose or corroded connector on the front of the engine above the fan pulley. Other wise the sensor is on the front of the engine and reads the teeth on the gear behind the crank pulley. This is a classic problem. Do a search and you will find a lot of help with this. The speed signal is used to "turn on" the alternator. Ken Irwin



PS. The gap for the sensor is set with a non metalic feeler gage of 0. 050 if memory serves. I can check the service manual when I get home.
