In the cab on the driver side under the dash their is a plug. I all ways thought that this year 1997 was not controlled by a computer. So what does this plug do?

Wild guess... trailer brake controller connector?

Bad guess.

There is a PCM on the truck that does control some systems such as the alternator, heater grids, A/C, etc. That is the interface connector for this.

It is called a data link connector and is mandated by federal law.Your truck is an obd2 model. Some of the pin locations are mandated by the protocol some are optional for the mfg to use as desired. The connector allows a scanner to communicate with all the modules on the bus, abs, air bags,engine/trans,etc

The pcm has some control IIRC you should have a 47re trans.A scanner will connect through the dlc to view data.

The pcm determines line pressure in the trans *so the trans will shift up and down. There is a governer and pressure sensor and a few other components and sensors it relies on.
