My buddy, not a member needs some direction...

His 97 3500 5 spd started acting up this weekend. Sometimes after he shuts it down and starts it up again, he can't get it in and out of gear (i. e. if it's in gear, it won't shift, if it's in N, it won't go into gear... . He checked the slave cylinder, everything there seems to be fine. Then it will just work fine again. Wierd thing.

The problem is intermittent. It's running fine right now. We think it's the clutch finally going. But we don't really know. I think it's a throwout bearing...

The truck has 200k and has been great.

Any help? Thanks

Probably the pilot bushing in the flywheel

It binds up on the transmission input shaft and this acts like the clutch not releasing. Do a search this has been discussed at length before. I'd give South Bend Clutch a call. They are also very knowledgeable about his issue and great to deal with. Ken Irwin

Try removing the rubber hat thing in the resiviour and run it a while, We had a costomer with the same issues and when this was done no more problem. The rubber hat was keeping the master cylinder from getting fluid.
