Hello everyone,

i have a 1998. 5 2500 with an automatic transmission, it has been worrying me fo a while and my worst fears came last night. i was headed home and got to the end of the driveway and pulled out in to the raod and it would not go anywhere! first gear is all i have anymore, i tried to get enough speed to maybe shift in to third but i never could get it. its like it shifts out of first and then has nothing. it never gave me a warning or anything! Does anybody have any idea what it might be? im thinking i should just carry it to a transmission shop and get it rebuilt or a new one. does anybody have any suggestions or know of a reputable shop around Palestine, TX (this is where my truck is). i dont have alot i can spend on it right now, but i was thinking of trying to do a manual conversion. any thoughts or help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Greetings,

From your description of the problem, it sounds as though a component of the front servo/kickdown band has failed. Another cause could be a stuck 1-2 shift valve in the valve body.

If it is the front band that's failed, it's likely the band anchor (which secures one side of the band) or the band strut (which secures the other end of the band) that has broken. These are somewhat common failure points on the front band. I believe they can be easily accessed and replaced without removing the transmission, although I've never done it personally. Just loosen the font band adjusting screw until the broken component can be removed and the replacement slipped in, then re-tighten the front band adjuster per the Dodge Service manual.

thank you for the information. i need to get it fixed asap cause im borrowing a ride for now. i dont know any trustworthy shops around here. im thinking i might just get a new or rebuilt transmission cause i have 140,000 miles on it already. has anyone had any dealings with the trannys they sell on Ebay? they sure seem cheap just wonder what the quality is? i want to get a transmission that will last me another 10 years if i can.

As with most things, the old rule generally holds true. You get what you pay for. Personally I'd stick with one of the reputable shops, Goerend is one I've never heard someone speak against, Suncoast, ATS, and some others are generally highly regarded as well. $0. 02

Here are some of the more popular aftermarket trans businesses web addresses;

DTT= DTT Performance Diesel Transmission and Power Accessories

ATS= www.atsdiesel.com

Goerends= Goerend Transmission Incorporated

Sun Coast = SUNCOASTDIESEL.COM

You can get the phone number from the TDR magazines for ATS,Suncoast,Goerend. DTT phone no. is on the web page.

If you do searches you can find the other after market trans businesses.

Most of the above trans businesses have trans ready to be shipped unless you want one made to ordred.
