My Parents have had a '98 Navigator, and a '01 Navigator. The '01 Navigator is leaps and bounds better than the '98... Almost like comparing a '94 Cummins to an '02 Cummins.
The Suspension is firm, and the ride is positive, but not harsh, ever.
Our '98 was lethargic,, terrible slow, brakes sucked and rolled around hard in corners, and was tiring to drive over 200 miles at a time because it felt hypersensitive to steering inputs.
To best describe our '98... A Fat kid trying to be competitive in gym class.
Our '01. Wow. Has good power. Ours has a Superchip tuner on it, and it raised the RPM limiter 500RPM, so it shifts pulling hard at 5,500 RPM, and on the right pavement will chirp the tires at @WOT.
Body roll is minimal, and steering feedback is good when pushing the limits. The brakes don't have much feedback, but are strong. We just changed our first pads at 43,500 miles.
With both trucks we've had problems with the door locks, and the windows making "popping" "buzzing" and creaking" noises going up or down.
I drive very hard, and even with several "geard drops" and plenty of revving in gear, and out of gear,, neither of our Navigators have had ANY motor, or transmission problems. (Traded in the '98 at ~70K, our '01 has ~49K)
I would pay $5k more for the '01 model.
The '98's sucked. As much as I was proud that our family had one of the first five Navigators sold in Texas,, it didn't do anything very well.
Our '01 is up there on Toyota Fit&Finish, Mercedes hardware, and Lexus type driveability.
FWIW.
