My check engine light has come on and hooking up the OBDII device it shows that the throttle position sensor has low input voltage. Is this unsafe to drive? If the sensor goes out, am I stuck with a fully closed throttle position or a fully open? I called my mechanic and had to leave a message. What should I check or what guidance do you have for me. Thanks,

Ron

You may start getting dead pedal symptoms. There is a reset procedure that may or may not help. I don't have it handy. Someone may chime in, or do a search, should be in a thread somewhere. Best bet is to order a new one from Genos. Get the aftermarket one, not a factory replacement. Much cheaper and better. They are not hard to put in. Come with good instructions.

If it fails you won't get a wide open throttle position but you may get an intermittent dead pedal. Worst case scenario it will be very difficult to drive especially in traffic. You can try the reset procedure but chances are if its the original sensor you are on borrowed time, they are a known weak point on the VP trucks. Generally I only buy OEM sensors for quality reasons but Dodge will only sell you the entire bell crank assembly which is $400-$500. Geno's sells just the sensor for about 1/4 of that and they appear to be every bit as good.

APPS reset procedure

1. Set parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cables on both batteries
3. Turn ignition key to run(to drain any remaining capacitors)
4. Let truck sit for 30 minutes( this is the recommended minimum)
5. Return ignition to OFF position
6. Reconnect both batteries and secure, not a timed event
7. Turn key to run position(not start) and depress accelerator pedal slowly all the way to the floor
8. Allow pedal to return to top position slowly
9. Turn ignition switch OFF
10.Release parking brake

One other thing to try. Unplug the the sensor and clean the connection. My 01 was doing same, after checking cables cleaning grounds. Pulled connection and cleaned so no more problem.

Went through the reset procedure and that got rid of the "Check Engine" light. I drove it around and stopped, turned the truck off and restarted and saw the light come back on briefly and then go out. Dunno, I will drive it to work tomorrow and we will see. If that didn't do it, I'll order the replacement from Geno's or Rock Auto. Looked for my manual and can't locate it. Where is the TPS on this diesel? Anyone got a picture of it's exact position?

Thanks,

Ron

The CEL comes on briefly at each start along with the other lights as a systems check, if it stays on longer you have a problem. The APPS is located under the black plastic cover at the front left corner of the valve cover. The new sensor comes with good instructions if you need it.

If the Throttle Position sensor does go out. what is the correct sensor to get. At Geno's, they have an after market TPS (TPS98502) for $169.00. However, at Rock auto, they show a TPS MOPAR 5017479AA for $65.00.

Is the Rock Auto the correct part?

The sensor from Rockauto would be the factory sensor. The one from Genos is the Timbo APPS. It should be longer lasting. On all of the different forums, I've only read of one problem. Rockauto also has the Airtex/Wells. That one should be about the best there is. Unfortunately it is quite spendy. I have a Timbo on my 2002. Good instructions and I believe he has a video on his website. If not, on youtube. I've had mine on for a year or two. No problems.

Thank you for the information. Just what I needed to know.

Mopar doesnt make any sensors on the CTD, that is for a gas engine. If you look at the picture listed there, it looks completely different than the Airtex/Wells sensor listed at the bottom of the page. The picture listed with the Airtex/Wells is what the APPS sensor looks like.

Here is a link to what your looking at right?
