I have a 1999 dodge diesel w/ auto

While driving, Check engine light comes on. When light comes on, Tach bounces around and drops to 0 rpm's . If engine is shut down with Tach at 0 rpm's truck will not start un engine cools down. How can I check the codes on this particular truck.

You need a scan tool. It sounds like your crank or cam sensor is bad. The crank sensor os behind the starter motor, gotta take it out to get to it,and they dont just come out, plan on it fighting you,and snapping a few pieces off of it.

Some '99s do the key on-off-on-off-on thing. Amen on the crank sensor though. Mine didnt go erraticly, it just stopped. There is a core on that sensor now (why!!?) but its only like $4. Im in the cummins dealer periodicly for work and knew the parts guy, so he give me a better price at sale because "that thing probly wont come back in one piece. "

Obert!, You sound like you've replaced your crank sensor more than once. I have replaced mine once, and I thought i was ALL SET.

Scan Tool

SNOWMAN

Where's the best place to get that scan tool? Anybody with opinions on that? How much does that run (ballpark??)

Just replaced it once. The parts guy told me id probly break it getting the thing out of the crankase, and I did... . EZ repair though, much better than the compact equipment I deal with professionally.

As far as the scan tool, there are several options but I think I'd have to suggest your generic parts store OBD II scan tool, around here they are about $130-$150. You can buy stuff from cummins, but more dollars and it talks to engine only. Cummins specific software would probly give you more accurate info, even some interactivity.

NAPA, Adance Auto, Auto Zone, etc. have a hand held model that plugs into your OBD plug in the cab. I saw a cool little deal at sears that plugged into your OBD plug and rode around with you, then after a trip you can plug it into your PC or laptop and read a host of information recorded while driving. I think it was on sale for $99.

More info on cam sensor replacement.

I am posting this for a friend of mine, so I'm kinda on the outside looking in.

I would like to know if anyone has any photos or good inside advice on replacing this cam sensor. I understand that it is behind the starter, what kind of tools are required to remove it and so on.

No pics, but I think I used a 10mm wrench and a couple screwdrivers to pry with. There is a tab tha sticks out and the bolt goes through that.

Look down at the end of the starter, there is an electrical pug sticking out of the engine.

QZ - seems there's a rash of "99 CEL" on going on - mine included. Hmmmmm - built in obsolescence by mother Dodge via our wonderful computers??? You never know. Any way, get back to us with your findings and I will do likewise.

Hope you have a happy and safe holiday season.
