1999 Bluebird Bus was running along and the engine began to miss badly and knock loudly.

I checked everything I could and all seems well. I pulled the intake off the head and it is FULL of black oil. No oil in the boost hoses.

The wrecker driver listened to it and said an injector is stuck

I am going to pull the injectors out as I don't really know where to start. Maybe drain the oil and look for parts in the pan?

Can a stuck injector do the terrible knock and blow oil into the intake?

I ran it w/out the valve cover, and all looks well in there.

An open injector will cause the cylinder to fill with fuel and upon compression there is too much too burn, hense the knock. Sounds like a rod came loose, but it is the piston trying to compress too much raw fuel.

Much like a hydro lock in a car if you loose a head gasket.

I would take the injectors get them tested, fixed and then change oil once you get it running again.

Later Jim.

The only thing I see wrong after removal of the injectors is the #1 injector tip is destroyed. I can see the top of the piston and it looks like ground chuck.

The injectcor is complete. I doubt the injector tip came apart and fell down as it's complete.

The piston must have grown longer, or the rod.

The valves are there. They open and close.

so is the piston carboned/fueled up

or is the metal hurt

if it's just dirty i would put the cheapest replacement injector i could find in there and start it ...

if it runs ok then change the oil and look for a set of injectors at whatever you can afford ...

or just run it that way (my choice)

It's tought to say what it is. Looking through the injector hole the top of the piston is chewed up. Like the aluminum has been hit many times over with sharp parts.

The pan will have to be removed and the turbo intake pulled off.

That is a very confusing statement, I am sorry but even the piston was to come all the way up to the head, which is comes real close already there is no way in the design of the piston that it can munch a tip of an injector, unless something else was bouncing around.

Well you can always just pull the head, and get a good look, wonder what you are using to look into the cylinder? We have a flexible bore scope, and even with that it is hard to see in there completly.

Keep us posted.

I can see the top of the piston through the injector hole. It's (the top of the piston) destroyed.

Something in there smashed the injector tip flat. Flat.

I have 24 buses here and don't have time to rebuild/tear-down an engine. It's going to the local truck dealership this am. I'll post what they find.

A disloged valve seat perhaps... ... ... ...

The local truck shop opened up the engine and found one of the valves had broken off and was flopping a round on top the piston. That is why the piston top was destroyed. Thus the loud knoking sound.

It needs a piston, all new injectors (to balance the one new injector) cylinder head and turbo.

I am told that 24 valve engines have a valve problem (now that they have some time on them) and loose the top of the valve time to time.
