I am looking at several dump trucks. One is a 97, which I know about as I have a 97 ext. cab, and the other two are 1999, and 2002. Is there any significant differences between the motors of these two trucks from a longevity, or reliability standpoint. I am sure the 02 has a bit more power, but am not sure how much.

How do the transmissions compare as both are auto's. I thought they were basically the same, but am not positive.

Is there any other things to consider between the two trucks such as frame strength or anything else?

The 1999 I am looking at is $18,000 out the door with nice fold down side dump, some cab options, 4x4 and 110,000. The 02 is cleaner, nicer all around, and only 4k more with less then 40,000 miles. The 02 sits 1200 miles away while the 99 is 150.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I would get the 97... . way easier to work on & less complicated. If you are leaning toward the 99... make sure it isn't a 53 block. I wouldn't get a automatic dump truck... . heavy hauling = slipping transmission.

What is a 53 block? I know what you mean about the 97. It just has a smaller dump bed, and I struggle paying 17 grand for a 10 year old dump truck. I am looking at autos as I will not be the only one driving the truck. I have workers with differing skill levels. I will likely regret the auto, and in the past have looked for a 6 speed in good condition.

Your comments mean a lot seeing how you have a 99.

Thanks

Keep in mind that the 99 and 02 have VP44's and they usually don't last more than 200K. The 02 has rear disc brakes which will help stop a heavy load.

A 53 block is a casting that has a greater possibility of cracking. I have one#@$%!

Outstanding! You guys are the best!

I knew there was a reason I sought out a 97 for my other Dodge. I guess there is a good chance that it is a 53 block as there have to be a bunch of them, and it would be my luck!

So the 2002 may be safe..... It is an 02, but I wonder if the motor might still be from the old batch! Intrigueing!

I will do more reading, and sorry to hear about your woes, that has got to be expensive.
