I did that upgrade to my 98. 5 last summer. The instructions above are good. The whole door panel does not need to be removed, but just enough to allow you to get at everything. I think I had to pop about 5 or 6 panel clips, and yes they broke so have some replacement ones available. I think I got mine from Autozone or O'Reillys.

One issue I had was when mounting the new mirrors, and I was working by myself, was difficulty getting the new mirrors pushed in tight enough to get the nuts started. I found that the brass clip that holds the electric wiring was interfering and not allowing me to push the mirror close enough. My old power/heated mirrors used a different, and better, method to hold the wiring. You have to be very careful to not pinch the wiring when you bolt the mirrors on. I removed the brass clip and cut off the screw boss, routed the wire so that it did not interfere with the body work and was not pinched on anything. It took some wiggling and pushing, but finally got the nuts started. Once the nuts are started, tighten them evenly. I carefully snugged them up as much as I thought was safe, without breaking a stud off. The mirrors work great with little or no vibration. Be sure you have the mounting plate that the studs pass through on the inside of the door, otherwise your studs will be too long and the mirrors will vibrate. Good luck.
