I changed me fuel filter the other day, ever since I did that I have been having problems starting the 24 valve after it has been setting for quit some time. Especially in the mornings. I have purged all the air from the system. I just replace the new filter with another new filter with all new O rings. Could it be the pickup pump? The Ram 2500 as around 96K for mileage. Does anyone have any info? Thanks

It's possible thats it's the lift pump but you might still have some air in there. How many miles since you changed the fuel filter?Any miss, etc when you get it running. Sure you got everything back on right?Son has 99 with 110000+ changes filter every 10000 but so far he has not had any problems. There will be others that might have had this problem commenting so be patientOo.

Or do you mean it won't start?Or just turns other a lot before it does start?Does it run rough?

It could definitely be the lift pump. You need to check the pressure at the filter housing. At 34000 miles mine was 11 psi and the manual states 10 psi minimum at idle (pre filter). I did not have any starting problems except after filter change it took a little while to get all the air out and keep it running. I decided to put a new pump on and save myself the aggravation. With as many miles as you have I would not doubt that your pump is at least on the marginal side.

I just changed the lift pump on my '99.

Fuel pressures were too low, at only 37,000 miles.

Check it with a gauge, probably yours is toast too.

DLeGore,

How long is "quite some time" please translate into minutes, hours, days, weeks,... ?

How does it run? (power... )

Do you have boost and/or egt gauges?

Are you sure no air is getting into system or fuel leak?

I don't have my Cummins maintenance manual (Freightliner issued) with me but I believe there is a overflow valve and this could be acting up.

There is a short rubber hose that connects to metal fuel line and vp144 pump that is where the overflow valve is located.

I have heard of at least one of these hoses leaking on a Dodge 24 valve. (actually it busted wide open, probably had started to deteriorate long before it let fuel pour out. )

Used to have to crack 3 injectors to bleed air when I changed fule filters. Then I had a new lift pump installed (@ 96k) no problems at all. Last weekend I installed new filter and 5 Geno's banjo bolts. Filled the filter housing w/fresh fuel, bump the engine 5 times before I even tried to start, then it fired off and died. 2 more bump starts let the pump cycle and it cranked about 8 times then fired to life - coughed a bit and smoothed right out. If you don't have gauges yet get some, at least get Briar Hoppers test gauge and check your psi. Get that new L-pump before the clock klicks 100k. Do a search under "test gauge" or "Briar Hopper".
