Is it really necessary to avoid over 50 mph the 1st 500 miles-I can avoid towing for 500 miles easy, but this under 50 would kill me-I might be able to keep it under 75 ;)

i have and have been told to pretty much to run it like you stole it with in reason ok. now for a gasser yes i would agree to the break in. but with the ctd do not baby it to much. hell when some one buys a big rig or a tractor they hook up and pull or plow the hell out of these engines. that is what they are built for.

I would just drive it like you normally do. The 500 miles before towing is mainly the break in time for the rear end. I would see no problem running 65 or 70 mph or 75. I myself usually run between 65 to 70 on the freeway. The US Hwy I travel most of the time is 60 mph, and I run between 60 and 65. Alot of the times I have to watch out to keep from running over someone running 50 to 55. :-laf

Robert,IMo the speed restriction is mostly for the rear axle run in. This time of the year its cooler outand it isnt as much of an issue anyway. Id drive it at 70-75 if it were mine.

Even when you break in brand new gears, the break in procedure is to drive 15 min, give a long rest, drive 30 min, give a long rest, then you are OK.

When I took mine to the dealership today to get some noise issues resolved, they quizzed the hell out of me regarding how much towing I did and at what mileage I was at when I started.

With My 2001, unplanned I bought it on the same day as the High Meadow fire broke out here in Colorado. So with less than 100 miles on the odometer I had to evacuate my horses 70 miles 2 trips with my 3 horse trailer.

Now I have 80k on it and see no ill effects. I would say the sooner that you tow with it the sooner you will get better mileage! And all of my vehicles have seen over 50 MPH on the test drive. And I have never lived close to a dealership, so I have brought them home on the highway. No problems yet!

Break-in? We don't need no stinkin' break-in!

Cummins site

Last nite I was reading the Cummins web site that someone on TDR posted in one of the other threads. Anyway, break in was one of the FAQs and Cummins did'nt have any specifics on the subject.
