I just changed my automatic transmission fluid and adjusted the bands. Now my first gear is in no hurry to go. It feels like it's slipping alot till I get up some speed or shift to second gear. I adjusted outward the rear band adjustment three turns like the Dodge Factory spec says for 47RE transmission. Before I used to do two turns outward like Haynes book says.

This time I also switched to ATF 4 oil (by the way). Is it my three turns leaving the band too loose? I have 90K miles with no mods to the transmission, just oil and filter changes yearly. Are less turns leaving the first gear tighter and now I'm too loose?

I put it in 911 thread due to I'm suppose to pull a two ton trailer on Friday and have one day to try to fix and I don't want to fry the transmission any more than it probably is. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks. Herb

HerbW, rear band adjustment is for third gear(shift... ) you need to adjust front band (low gears).

Could be the transmission fluid causing it to slip.

First gear is only the rear clutch!! ( and the over-running clutch ) Unless you select manual low, then the rear band applies. Try this, start off in drive, as soon as you feel it slipping, select manual low. Does this change anything?

The front band is second gear.

If the rear clutch is slipping, it will get worse in second and third. It is used in all forward gears.

The rear band is only used for manual low (engine braking for example ) and it is used for reverse.

.

Front band adjustment is 2 turns loose from snug (72 inch pounds then back out 2 turns and lock the jam nut)

Rear band is adjusted the same but backed off 3 turns.

I suspect your in limp mode for some reason. It would feel like the transmission is slipping. Put the truck to neutral and pull imediately to 1st. Then take off, shift to second, see if it feels like a shift, and then do to third(D). If it appears to shift 3 times you are in limp for some reason.

Well if I start in manual first gear on the shift lever, it's ready to go right away. So does that says the rear band is working fine? In drive on the lever, all my shifts go smooth, it just seems slow to go to second gear. I stopped on a hill and when I started to go, it was like in neutral for a moment before it would go. I tried this again in manual low and it took right off. Some of my problems also could be the temperature outside right now. It's freezing temps out now ,which is unusual for Portland area for very long. What I need is a new torque converter and a rebuild. When I service the transmission, my oil is clean(like when I put it in) without much of anything in the bottom. It's always been that way. Thank you for your help. Any more advise is appreciated. Herb

transmission could be in limp. When it is in limp mode, you only have Drive. You can jumper the Transmission power relay, it is under the hood on the drivers side on top of the front fender. If you jumper the contacts on that and it seems to behave normally you need to get a scanner and read the codes. If jumping that relay has no effect then I would say bad govenor solenoid.
