freind of mine just bought a 1st gen and would like a tach ...

didn't like the looks of the factory tach in my first gen

saw a reference to an autometer tach at the tst website

anyone using one ...

parts #'s ?

Yup - Most of us using an Autometer tach are running the #2888 diesel tach. It gets signal from a sender that straps to the alternator - works great, looks great. Pics in my readers rigs/diesel.

I had the autometer tach in my 93, I can't remember the part #, but it was 2" I believe, I bought an A pillar mount for it and the harness adapter that plugs into the harness under the dash. It worked fine for me and didn't take up a bunch of room on the column or the bottom of the dash like most of the bigger ones.

DK, what kind of tach and what harness? Very inquisitive minds want to know...

Gracias,

As I said, I don't remember the part #, I sold the truck over a year ago. I remember it was a 2" or 2 1/8" tach by Autometer, the harness was in their catalog under accessories. If you want to call my friend Kenny, I buy most all of my stuff from him, He does cummins conversions in any mutt you can drag into his shop. Contact info is Kenny at Autoworld 406 727-8915, he is the owner, and a wealth of knowledge on anything you need aftermarket for a cummins including banks gear vendors etc. Tell him you're looking for the same tach that Dave K had in his white 93 service truck. I used to work for him when we first moved here, so he'll know who I am. He keeps computer records of all accounts so it will be easy for him to find.

I liked it because it was not a huge knee banger or dashtop obstacle like most of the big ones you see in the "import nip nip racers".

I am using the Isspro tach and it works well for me.

The early trucks 89-91. 5 and later models 91. 5-93 have a couple different harnesses/parts.

The later trucks just plug right in to a connector under the dash. The early trucks need a "pickup" put on the gear cover and a magnet (I think it is) to supply the signal to the tach.

You can get more info and/or parts from Piers Diesel.

FYI, I am a bit biased as I work for Piers.

I have the autometer tach, but it won't pickup the signal off the alternator. Any pics or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried the plug in harness adapter like I mentioned previously in this threadf way back when?

If you can't get the alternator strap to work, you can always install the tach sensor kit autometer sells onto the harmonic balancer. Since you have an auto, it may be cluttered around it already with the cruise control's rpm sendor. I have piggy backed them on it with a homemade bracket, but that might be beyond your skills? Not an insult, don't know your background;)

THe plug in harness adapter I put in my '93 was a 1/2 hour job. Easy and foolproof.
