Found a wire off on my pump solenoid. This is the solenoid located closer to the front of the engine. Don't know what it is for, obviously not shut off since the truck was running fine before and after putting the new end on wire and reconnecting it. This solenoid has a small tube that runs up around and back in to the pump. Could someone tell me what this solenoid does and is called ? I tried to find a drawing that would show location and name of parts but must not have entered correct search words. 91 w/intercooler.

Still have a lot to learn on this stuff. Thanks... R C

Its the KSB solenoid that advances timing until the engine warms up.

Its the reason there is a puff of black smoke out the exhaust on warm starts.

If you rig it to a switch it will give you 15-20HP warm. But do not run it 24/7 like this.

I have mine hooked up to my water/meth system. When it hits 15# boost it kicks 12vdc to the solenoid.

I only use my water/meth either towing or 1/4mile.

So that might be the reason that everyone with a small car with open window gives me that look when I start it? ;)

How do I tell if it is working or not? Will the truck start differently? Mine starts instantly when warm, and well when cold. But I do get a pile of smoke when it starts. I also get smoke until the beast warms up, then the idle smoke goes away.

There is a way to check the function... . when the motor is warm and running, attach a jumper wire from the "+" on the battery to the spade connector on the solenoid... put it on/off, on/off a few times..... you'll soon hear a subtle difference in the engine sound, it may also have a touch more RPM with the wire on too... .

If you detect a shift towards a more "metalic" sound with the wire on, then the solenoid is working... .

pb...

Thanks for the tip

Thanks for the tip on KSB soleniod diagnosis.

Mine works fine.

Off to work on my other issues now.
