51 Chevy Truck Meets 96 Cummins 6BTA

90 6bt To 77 Chevy K30 4x4

Here is what I need to know, will a 89-93 starter bolt up & work on an 01 flywheel housing. The reason I ask is I am replacing my chevy transmission & flywheel housing with dodge stuff. Now my starter is on the driver side instead of the passenger side, so I think I will have a few clearance issues if I use the 01 starter. I noticed that the older starters mounted closer to the engine. I think the 89-93 starter will solve the clearance issues if it will bolt up. Thanks for any help guys. All this is going in my 72 if it matters (see sig)

I also tried to use a 89-93 starter on a 2nd Gen Flywheel Housing adapter for a space issue. If I remember correctly, only 2 of the 3 bolt holes line up. More important is the fact that the starter drive will not engage the ring gear. The entire starter is different position in relation to the flywheel ring gear. I even tried using a GM/Cummins starter with a 2 bolt mounting. It would mount, but again the starter drive will not engage the ring gear. Both the GM and the Dodge 89-93 starter drive, when in drive position is about 3/16" space between the drive and ring gear. Great idea, but it wont work. So you can see exactly what I am describing, stick your Chev starter in the flywheel housing adapter and rotate/pull the drive into start position. Look at the drive and ring gear, you will see the problem. Its exactly the same with a 89-93 starter.

well I guess I got my question answered :{ . Any recommendations on a starter that would fit. I just need one that is mounted closer to the engine.

To my knowledge, there is none. I have always had space problems with the starter on the Power Wagon/WC's I have built. I have won by moving the engine 1. 625" to the right. I have no idea if moving the engine on your project will help or not. I did consider cutting the nose off a 2gen starter and a 89-93 starter, then welding the 2gen nose on the 89-93 starter. I believe that would work, however then you have a special starter. If it ever fails, you cant get one off the shelf at NAPA

I tried several different starter noses that I got from a rebuilder and tried to use them on a rebuilt medium duty starter that came with my engine. They would fit the starter but would not mesh with the flywheel. I also tried the first gen. Dodge starter.

I think the NV4500 will bolt to a 1st gen. Getrag 5 speed bellhousing. You would also need a 1st gen engine adapter and flywheel for a Getrag 5 speed.

Check with some of the 1st gen. owners to make sure.

The NV-4500 will NOT bolt to a GetRag Bell Housing. Advance Adapters makes a NV-4500 BellHouse that will bolt to the 89-93 Getrag Flywheel housing Apapter. The 89-93 starter. flywheel and clutch can be used in this configuration.

well

if it helps at all i am doing a getrag to nv4500 conversion

i have lot of picutres of both starter set ups.

as i changed the spacer between the engine and trans

if you want them just send me your e-mail address

I misread my Advance Adapters catalog a few months back. It states, "On 4WD installations, the new transmission is a direct replacement for the Getrag 5 speed. " But reading farther it means when using their bellhousing kit.

Sorry about that.

Save yourselves alot of headache and put the getrag bellhousing parts on ebay or dump them on someone who doesn't know better. You can just about get all the factory 2nd generation parts to use all NV-4500 as designed for the cummins for the price of advaned adapters cobbled weak aluminum casted adapter. I would never use an aftermarket adapter for something like this when there is a factory designed solution available. If you source the parts in a wrecking yard, it will be even cheaper to do it this way.

I only use the 2nd gen parts when disposing of the getrag setups. It will bolt up with no issues. I did this to my '93 dodge as well as my 85 Chevy crew cab with 12 valve and 2nd gen bellhousing/ nv-4500 with 205 transfercase. The driveshaft didn't interfere with anything. I rerouted the exhaust pipe to clear the 205 but I was also going to 4" pipe if I remember right at the same time.
