After the storys I've heard about changing your oil for the first time I was worried.

It was the easiset oil change in my life.

1. Didn't have to jack up truck even though it's a 2wd.

2. All oil fit in my normal change container (although it was very very full). Also didn't have to search for the right socket, just used the wrench and an extension.

3. Oil filter came off easily. At first I thought something was slipping but nope it came off easily. When it came off it didn't leak a drop, normally cars drain a some off from the engine filter housing big mess. This made no mess.

4. Installed my fumoto easy drain plug.

5. Installed new filter after filling it and letting it absorb some oil and filling it again. Filter has instruction on it to pre-fill it.

6. 3 bottles of the 4 quart rotella in.

7. Nothing to grease (although I wish there was).

Cost was under $30 bucks... .

Done, can't say enough good things about this truck. Oil was black black black but I hear that's normal..... Wish I had done it sooner now with 5k miles on the clock..... :(

I agree, I find that the oil changes in my 3rd gen truck would be easier than my 2nd gen IF I hadn't installed mudflaps and side bars :) . Because of those 2 items, I have to jack the truck up--of course my 51 inch chest doesn't help matters either :-laf

I am getting ready to do mine for the first time as well. What is the recommended oil for the truck? I live in Colorado so it gets cold but not Canada cold and I won't be towing anything heavy until it warms up again. I do have a factory filter ready to go. How many quarts/gallons does it take including filling the filter?

I hit some low temps up here at 9,000 feet- pluggin' in every night. I use the Mobil 1300 Delvac 15/40... . 3 gallons with fleetgaurds ordered from Geno's

See THIS THREAD for more info.

Cummins Great Plains in Omaha, NE. , recomends NOT using Rotella-T, as they have seen foaming problems with it.

I use Mobil Delvac 1300, I seem to have noticed a mpg increase after I changed to it (???)

Did they take the zerks off the tie rod ends, or do you not have those on the 2WD? I get to grease mine every time I change the oil.

I read you put 3 gallons in it. All the 2nd gen trucks held 11 quarts, did they change to 12 in the 3rd generation?

11+1 is what the book says. 11 in sump, 1 in filter. when i change the oil on my truck, it gets 3x 4 liter bottles, so if they [the lube oil bottling plants] are being accurate, that is a little over 12qt's [1 qt is 0. 946 liter] in my sump
