I was wondering what kind of break-in oil is put in these trucks at the factory? I took my truck to Dodge for the first oil change. I brought my own oil(Delo 400). Ever since they changed the oil the oil pressure has been higher. When I'm warmed up it runs about 50psi. It used to run about 40psi. I have a 2001 with automatic trans. 3200miles.

Cummins premium blue is OEM oil. It is a seemingly thin, low detergent break-in oil. Cummins does not reccomend synthetic until after 10k I think. My oil pressure is higher with Rotella T than with the factory oil in it. One more thing, I read somewhere that the factory oil has minimal anti-wear additives to aid in break-in.

break-in

I would break in the engine like the old timers did of years gone by, that is, accelerate moderately to put pressure on the piston rings against the cylinder walls and then let off the throttle and coast down to about 30 mph to let the rings pull up oil for lubrication, do this about 10 times and your engine will be good to go for many, many miles. Was told this method by many, many old time mechanics and I have done this on every new truck and engine I have rebuilt through the years, never, ever had a ring seating problem.

I stopped at a Cummins Store last week and asked for PB 2000. It was stated "Cummins does not recomend the Premium Blue 2000 fo use in my rig. This oil is a synthetic blend as I understand it. Not blessed with a lot of knowledge on oils. What is wrong with a blend sold by Cummins? I used it in my 97 for 80,000 some odd thousand miles. Did I screw up this engine?

I am running Premimum Blue now not the 2000.

All Premium Blue Oils are Fine.

Nothing wrong with Premuim Blue or PB2000. Neither is a breakin oil. One is straight mineral and one is semi-sythetic. Those that like to change oil ever 2 - 3K would do well with just the PB. The PB2000 is more like a 5 - 8K mile oil.

The PB would have no problem getting an engine to 300K.

At one time Cummins was not recomending the PB2000 in B series because of tappets requiring SJ (???) rated oil. Not the case any more. It is just fine to run but might be a good idea to wait until 10K on the clock. PB2000 is slightly better in colder climates.
