Recently, I have been thinking of getting a 2nd generation truck. I really like my 1st gen, but there have been a few things that have made me start thinking about a 2nd gen. Prior to the 1st gen I owned 2 different 2nd gen gassers (hated the gas engines, but liked the truck). I realize that there are some distinct differences among the two. I really like the manual front hubs, NP205 transfer case, ease of maintenance under the hood, and how rugged the truck is. But what I don't like is the VERY harsh ride (neither does my wife!), small rear jumpseats, VE pump, and Getrag trans. If I were to go to a 2nd gen truck I would want a 12V 5 speed also. I really like the idea of the P7100 pump, the NV4500 (except for the 5th gear nut), quad cab, ride quality, and fit & finish. I would like to get some opinions from others that have experience with both 1st and 2nd gen trucks on what I should do?

4020Deere - I really like your user name. The JD 4020 is one of the best tractors JD made IMO, and most versatile.

Anyway as far as your question. A quad-cab 12v will be a bit difficult to find. They started production in 98 and consequently this is the last model year the made the 12v. 98. 5's were over valved Cummins. You are on the right track though. I agree with you about the downfalls of a first gen truck.

IMO you should look for a 96-98 12v. And since you want a stick, you will luckily get the 215hp pump. You may have to settle without a quab-cab though for the reason mentioned above.

I miss my old 92 every once in a while... but only for the memories. I have a '99 overly valved(?) Cummins now, and for many of the reasons you stated, I think it is much better. And a lot more power!

The first generations still turn my head, tho... they just look mean and tough.

If you truely want a 12v QC I say hold out till ya find one, they are out there. Let me know if you decide your serious about getting one and I will try to find one. I found one for HelicopterDan. However be prepared to pay a premium price :D

The boys are steering you correctly. You did mention fit and finish, therefore, you will luckily avoid the disasters being built in Warren, MI... and in finding a Club Cab, make sure you get a Mexican assembled truck. My experiences as a body-man have shown me that the Fenton-built trucks are hit or miss in the quality area (paint, dash fit, fender gaps, etc. ).
