Welp, the results are in!

They didn't email me the results this time so I'll try a scan and see if that works. However, this oil seems as good or better than CI-4 oil.

Oil had 14,575 towing miles on it with no makeup oil.

Engine had 306,869 miles on it.

Iron was down @ 33 (my average is 39)

Boron was up @ 15 (my average 3)

Silicon stays around 3-4

Calcium was down @ 2,444 (my average 3488)

Magnesium was down @ 5 (my average is 10)

Phosphorus was down @ 896 (my average 984)

Everything else stayed pretty much average.

TBN = 4. 1

I dunno? I'm gonna do a filter change and add some makup oil this go-round and go 20-something. I've never done that. The longest I've ran this oil is 18,517.

J hardwick, What was your potassium level in the sample?? I just had my first sample done with the same oil and my Potassium was 11 and the Ave was 2. They explained it as new engine break in as cummins coats the engines with a spray that has potassium in it. After doing some searches I ran across a thread where a few guys had their potassium levels increase with the Rotella as they used it as an additive. FOr good measure and comparison I am running Delo this time... Let me know the potassium number if you can! Thanks!

My potassium was 5 and my average is 6.

I don't pay much attention to the universal averages because those numbers are based on 6,500 mile oil changes. My oil always has 2-3 times those miles.

Boron is a multi-source metal.

When found in engine oil it's source can be a Lube additive, or coolant inhibitor.

CD

on the locomotives i work on, we use borate nitrate as the cooling system additive, and in a sample burn, that reads as boron. .

i don't think our hoat coolant will register as boron. . ?

Looks great!

1) less iron means less wear which is always good.

2) more Boron is because virgin Rotella in the CI4+ had only around 3-4 ppm to begin, while the CJ4 has 35 ppm.

3) Again virgin Rotella has around 4ppm silicon in it, so your air filter is doing its job.

4) Both Phosphorous and Zinc are a little less in the CJ4 oil compared to the CI4+, so lower on those would be expected.

5) TBN is 10. 3 to start, so if you are at 4. 1, you can figure how much more you would want to go. Make up oil will help.

Tom.

Additives are incorporated in engine oils to improve existing desirable properties of base stocks and to impart new specific properties required by modern engines. The additives include antioxidants, detergents, dispersants, corrosion and rust inhibitors, viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants, foam inhibitors and tribological agents.

Boron can be used as an oil additive, but only in very small amounts. Boron is also found in Antifreeze, so high concentrations of Boron could be coming from antifreeze, and I would be concerned about that. I have never had over 7 PPM of Boron in the oil analysis reports of the oil I use, and that 7 PPM was after having 54,000 miles on the oil!
