Hi Everyone,

I'am the proud owner of a 1990 W250 4x4 Reg cab CTD, with a 727 Auto transmission with 286,000 miles. I am very impressed with the truck the way it is but as it is with most people I would like a little more power but, with the miles on the truck I don't want to go to far with the mods.

I have had the truck for almost a year and have so far rebuilt the transmission and the rear diff. According to the maintaince records everthing on the motor is original, although I think that the pump has been turned up a little (it's faster to 65mph than a friends 8. 1L Suburban). I was wondering if anyone out there has any diagrams as to what screws do what on the injector pump and where I should have my diaphram and starwheel adjusted to for the best reliability and power, I should tell you all i don't know too much on the technical side of Injector pumps,Turbos, or Diesel but I am very eager to learn. I would also be very thankfull if anyone out there knows where I can find a tach for my truck as the local dealer is of no help

I hope I haven't been to long winded,

and thanks for any info for this diedel rookie.

I can be E-Mailed at -- email address removed --

Thanks to all who reply.

Welcome to the Forum

Here is some help on pump adjustments:

http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/more_power/Power_ve.htm

Also if you do a search of the 1st Gen forum for pump adjustments you will find alot of info on the subject. A tach from the dealer went out of stock along time ago, the next best thing is one from Isspro or another gage company. Also if you are tweaking the pump, the first thing you need is a pyro in the exhaust, that will keep you from getting in the danger zone and smoking your engine.

Once again welcome.

Thanks for the info about the tach and the pyro, I am checking into getting the pyro, and boost gauges along with a exhaust system from Bank as I've heard some good things about their products. :)

Don't jump into it yet. Banks is very good but very expensive, there are other companies where you'll get more bang for the buck. Do some research before jumping the bridge.

Thanks HEY BOSS,

You guys would know better than me where I could get the most for my money (which is good considering my budget). Who would you reccomend for a exhaust system and maybe a intercooler as well, exhaust temps are a major concern for me. I drive alot on the interstate and the truck only does about 80mph and I really do not like to push it that hard.

On another subject, how do I enter a signiature? I know almost as much about computers as I do Diesels. I would be thankfull for any assistance on that as well.

Thanks.

keastberg, welcome to the site.

I can remember askin' the same question once upon a time, so I'll do my best to explain.

1. On this same page go up to the top left corner next to the word TDRountable in red letters there are 7 small gray boxes, click the first one, user cp.

2. Once your on that page click on edit profile in blue letters.

3. Scroll down to the signature box, and let us all in on your list of truck, mods, and anything else you would like to share.

Note to all other members, My recent addition, the Gearvendors, words can't describe my satisfaction with this unit. I've logged about 2,000 trouble-free miles so far. Money very, very well spent:D :D :D

keastberg... WELCOME !! :D :D :D

You're gonna luv the ole 12 valve. The mileage is no big deal if regular upkeep has been done.

I agree on the Banks exhaust opinion already expressed. They make high quality, well fitting components but they are pretty pricey. You CAN get good aftermarket components for less money, that work exactly the same, leaving a few dollars for other things. What you give up is the name plate on the Banks equip.

Exhaust systems are pretty widely available now. From aluminized steel to stainless sytems in 3 1/2" to 5" sewer pipe exhaust (my description)

Gauges are a must no matter what anyone says, as far as I am personally concerned. There's no way to tell were you started and were you ended up without a baseline.

A couple tips for the 1st Gen trucks are:

Max RPM - 3000 RPM

Max continuos EGT - 1,250*F (1,350*F 1 minute in 5, 1,500*F about 20 seconds :--) :--) )

The generally accepted "upper end of HP" for the 1st Gen truck is about 300HP +or-

edit: Take AlK's suggestion below to heart... mount the pyro probe PRE-turbo like he said. Its a real eye opener !!

Have fun, ask questions, and drop in alot.

keastberg,

Welcome aboard. This is a great place for good information. My advice regarding the pyro gauge I would recommend that you install the thermocouple pre turbo, you will get a much more accurate temperature reading and you will not have to do any mental math. There is quite a difference in temperature readings between pre and post turbo.

Have fun!

 Thanks everybody for the info, It's nice to know that there are people out there who share a intrest in these old trucks and realize that just because it isn't new doesn't mean it's not cool.

Maybe after I get a little more out of the engine you guys could help me save my kidneys and give me some tips on some suspension work (Lifts and shocks).

Thanks for all help given, I can't wait until I can return the favor when another rookie like me has a question.

Welcome to the group, as for being a rookie don't sweat it, I am on my 2nd year with my Cummins Crew Cab and still consider myself a rookie:D . Lots of good times and good people here at TDR. You got to try a bombing seccession, its a real blast and you learn a lot! Only downside is when you catch the bombing bug it can get a little expensive;) . As for gauges, get some ! its a must for any other bombing mods & can save your Cummins. Banks makes lots of great(& expensive) Cummins upgrades BUT gauges are NOT one of them. You can save a lot of time and money just by asking questions here. Have fun & bomb on !
