Towing/Tire Pressures

Glenwood Springs?hotel or campground

Well, after a whole lot of head scratchin' I finally bought and installed an Edge EZ. I finally decided to do it mostly because of my new 5ver. The HO pulled pretty good already, but I needed a little more on some of these monster hills I hit leaving out of So. Cal. The install was quick, (even though DC did their best to hide the Data Link) and the instructions were good.

The first impression really was not that dramatic, probably due to the 6 speed. The shift points are close (on purpose) and you don't get a lot of speed between shifts in town. On the highway I noted a big difference stepping down on the go pedal in 5th or 6th. But the real test was the first tow. I pulled down to San Diego area and hit a few good inclines. The response was dramatic. So much in fact, that I may have to keep my foot out of it in the lower gears, because the Cummins will now over power the stock clutch. This is felt by a mild "shudder" it I hit it too hard with the 12k of 5ver in back. When I'm rolling in 5th or 6th I did not notice the shudder, just an incredible difference in the power on the hills. I came back from SD on a trip that I made many times before, and knew I would have to down shift to keep the speed up at certian grades. NOT THIS TIME And on top of that, it appears that the milage went up about 2-3 mpg I am going to love this on the trip to Idaho this summer.

Gotta go see if I can get this grin off my face before work, people think your simple minded... ... ... . Sarge

When towing you may have higher EGTs than you would like and need to pull your foot off the go pedal. You may need a pyrometer to know when.

I see you found what you wanted to pull , but not an Automate. Its probably fine.

I agree with the pyro....

but before that, you might take the front cover off and move the little"clip" from the "fun" factory position to the other end (raises the full fueling up to 15lbs of boost instead of 2lbs of boost);)

That does take some of the fun out of it, :{ but is a safety factor if when towing. :p

Steve, can you explain why doing this provides a safety factor while towing? I'm getting ready to two for the first time with my new EZ. Thanks ...

Get some DDII's in that thing and you will REALLY notice a differance pulling. Just finished a 3600 mile trip to Wyo and MT and NEVER ran out of poop pulling a 9k TT. GET A PYRO THOUGH... in the higher elevations (5. 5k and on up) with the summer temps (85*+) you REALLY have to watch the EGT... .

I have a Pyro and you are right. I notice that my EGT's run higher even running empty and not towing since the air temps here in UT have been 100+ lately. I usually have to idle about 30 secs more to let the turbo cool down when I stop.

Is this the product that requires a wire tap?

Or is it the one that does not. Sounds like something we will be looking into maybe next summer after we get gauges. I am still wondering about becoming our own warranty station is all.

Thanks

I whole heartedly agree with the gauges. They are going in this weekend!! And no, the Edge EZ does not pierce the pump wire. I also did not want to go that route. Threre are two hook-ups. The Data Link connection, and a male and female connection for the MAP sensor. THATS IT!!! For a service run to the dealer, the Edge is easily unplugged, and as a matter of fact, the documentation with the Edge recommends to un-hook it before going in for service. This prevents the Edge from setting any erroneous codes on the Dealer's diagnostic machine. I too wanted the extra power without fooling with the fueling... ..... Sarge:D

Ken, by moving the "clip" it tells the EZ not to fuel up to it's maximum until the boost is up (where there is enough air to burn the extra fuel) and that usually requires more RPM's on an otherwise "unmolested" engine. I guess you could call it some sort of self imposed "anti-lugging" device. JMO

;)

I have a Comp and run it in 1x1 which = an EZ. Reason is to not add fuel till boost is up and the engine is ready for it AND can use it efficiently.

I can turn off the Comp (EZ mode) and LOSE 1 mpg. Turn it on and GAIN 1 mpg. I have done this over about two weeks. EVERY time same results, therefore I can conclude that the mpg is better WITH the Comp (1x1)

I got the comp so i could turn it off if needed. I did not pierce the VP wire.

I put in DD2's also and towed the first time with that combo and thought I had gone to heaven. The smoothest easiest power management I have ever had in a vehicle.

flat B = #6

gentle rise B = #8 - 10

steep rise B = # 12 - 20

all egt's were under 1000*

flat 600*

gentle 800*

steep 950*

I have NEVER had a vehicle that I was TOTALLY pleased with the power range. But have it now!

Sarge - Your increased fuel mileage may not be real. If you're judging it from the overhead display, that data gets thrown off with the addition of the EZ. Check it by hand. You may get a marginable fuel mileage gain, but 2 to 3 mpg sounds high.

Also, if your EZ came with a boost elbow, install it if you didn't already. It will allow the turbo to blow more boost before the wastegate opens. Blowing extra air into the mix will help reduce the EGT's. That's the best thing you can do for your EGT's. Other things (exhaust for one) will also help, but the boost elbow is free with your EZ and I hear it drops max EGT's about 200°F.

BTW - I'm running an EZ (with elbow), RV275's, and no muffler (MEK). I'm probably down 20 to 30 horses from the DD2 set-up as mentioned above. But I love this combo. Power out the wazoo, and right where you need it. I too am at the limit of a stock clutch, so I'm at my bomb limit too.

Boost elbow

Yeah, I installed the boost elbow when I made the initial install. The mpg is still mostly a guess, as the trip wasn't long enough to require a refuel, and I did some extra driving on that tank. I just kinda guesstamated the non towing milage. I will go again in a few weeks and can check it then.

Im still not clear on moving the jumper clip though. The installation instructions indicated it should be moved if there were other mods. You say to move it to the first position anyway  Sarge

Installed an EZ on my non-HO 5spd about two years ago. I pull a 32' Alpenlite and the EZ made a significant difference in power when going up hills. Never comes close to an overtemp even during the summer on a 7% grade. Gained about one gear with this mod. I set the EZ to kick in at about 10 PSI as I just wanted the extra pull and not the big power acceleration off the line... :)
