Off Roading any Salt lake city weekend wariors?

Competition How Cool Is This Dragster?

I put a 2 1/2 inch lift on the front end today. I was running 285 BFG muds and had a set of 305 Good Year Wrangler MT laying around the barn, so I went and got them put on. The truck still looks stupid, just swallows them! Does any body have the same setup? If so which tires are you running? I do some occasional pulling with this truck so so 8 plys would be great but don't think they offer that in bigger tires.

---Appreciate the info---

The 285's and the 305's are the same height, just different widths. Quite a few people are running the 315's, which are 2" taller the the 285/305's. The BFG A/T and M/T are rated at 3195@50 psi on the 315's. I've been loking around for aggressive tread tires with a high load rating, but they are sort of hard to find. Some of the 17" tires have a little higher ratings, if you want to go that way.

I'm running 305 BFG Muds and will be going back to 265's to get rid of a little sidewall flex and get 150 lbs higher rating. Good luck in your search.

Do the tires rub much Rwineman, I love the look on the factory wheels. Also is there much sidewall flex, is it squirelly on the highway. I am about to do the same. but I have a rep. bumper.

Thanks Jared

Hopefull tomorrow I will receive my 2. 5 leveling kit from DT and my Rickson 19. 5 wheels with 285 tires, they are 35. 4 inches tall and rated for 6200 lbs each  These tires will last over 100k and there aint no flex in them. :D

cheers, Kevin

Interco who makes swamper tires now has a new tire called the Trxus mud terrain that has a 285-75-16 with a 10-ply rating and a load range E rating. It's the first tire in that size that I've seen with a 10-ply rating, aggressive tread, and supposed to have a fairly quiet highway design (and a thick sidewall). They are about $140. 00 apiece so I imagine they are going to be popular but I'd sure like to here from somebody who is running them before I commit to a set.

hillcountry,

Check out the intercotire.com

they have a number of different swampers that are around 35" and are rated between 3400-3700 lbs

35-12. 5r16 SSR is rated at 3640lbs

I'm running the TRXUS tires on my 92. There 33x12. 5x16. 5's. They are very quiet on the highway just like they claim. I only have had them on for 6,000 miles so I don't know how long they will last but so far so good. I do know that I don't get stuck and they look good:cool: I go through places that I used to need 4 wheel drive in 2 wheel. So far I have been very pleased. Hope they make them in a size for my 03:D

Ted, I'm trying to stay around 32" or 33". 35's may be too much for me. I only have 3. 55's, so it would be geared a little too high for me. I have been looking at Super Swampers but I'm a little worried about short tire life and on-road manners. Being that they would'nt be one of the taller sizes, it probably would'nt be much of a concern.

What tires did you get whitmore? What rims? I been waiting on mine for 6 weeks

Brian there are meny many more options in those short sizes for aggressive treads and higher weight ranges. It is not hard to find a ~33 inch tire ie. 285/75r16 with a higher weight rating than the stock tires.

As for road manners the truxus is getting good reviews. The goodyear MTR is suposed to be a great tire. For more agressive options the swamper SSR is supposed to be a good trade off although you do loose longevity. I recently started a thread asking opinions on the 35-10. 5r16 SSR and got few real answers specifically about that size but i know of a number of guys around here with lifted trucks running 37-12. 5r17 SSR with great success.

As for the gearing issue. I run 4. 10s but there are a lot of guys on TDR that have 35+ inch tires on 3. 55 gears with out problems. The first that comes to mind is rob thomas who does weight pulling with that combo.

If you like the look of a 305 on your truck the shorter ratio 70 tire lends itself more easily to the tie companies making heavier load tires. You see more e range options in a 305.

i have had good success with 295/75r16 BFG at ko. I just ordered a second pair with 50k miles on the current ones. i could have gooten more out of them except for running a craked wheel for a while and so alignment issues. They are not an overly aggressive tire at all and suit my over all needs well. They are also rated to 34XX lbs each.

Thanks for the help Ted. I've had BFG, Goodyear, and Interco on my Favorites list for a long time. I finally printed out all the different tires from them that I like, and have a list of 6 in the size range I'm looking for with a 3000+ lb. load rating. I did'nt see that the 285 Goodyear MT/R was rated at 3305@65 psi. I might have to consider that one. The BFG Mud in that size is rated for 3195.

I'm stuck on not going above 33". Even though the tire may have a high weight rating, it still has to have some pretty bad sidewall flex with alot of weight on them. Plus, like I stated before, it would raise my gearing. I don't want to have too tall of gearing with a gooseneck full of roundbails.

Thanks again.

Brian

Another tire to consider is the Cooper mud tires, they are 10 ply and my dad swears by them, he's in the oil fields in oklahoma every day and puts on high highway miles as well. Me, I've run BFG's for the last 10 years and currently have 285x75x16 All terrians with about 90k miles on them. Thier starting to get a little bald.

What about 295's?

I'm seriously considering this size in the Nitto Terra Grappler.

Has anybody run this tire or this size? They are only made by a few manufactures... BFG and Nitto and probably more... but they are taller than 285's and only 0. 5 inches wider so control arm rubbing isn't as much a problem like on the 315's. The 315's are over an inch taller and over 0. 6 inches wider than the 295's.

The 295's are also rated higher - 3415lb vs 3305lbs for the 285s... and the 315's are only rated for 3195lbs... at least that is what the Nitto site says about THEIR tires. Can't speak for the BFGs.

Given that they are taller (3 inches over the stock 265/75), I was hoping someone could speak from experience if this causes more tirewall flex and gives the truck a negative feel going down the road / corners, etc.
