The other day, whilst I was basking under the hood, I noticed a slight stench lingering. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that my passenger side battery had popped. It is leaking like a stuck pig, and crap is running down the side and has pooled up in the battery box. The hold down brackets are corroded. I promptly dumped a box of baking soda around under the hood. The dealer said they had "a" battery and I need to get it in right away.

My question is- Should both batteries be replaced at the same time or is it ok to replace only one? The truck is a little over a year old, and I have 11,000 miles on it.

Also, what might cause this to happen? Thanks

Both should be replaced at once but since I assume you are under warranty it's unlikely the dealer will replace both. One bad battery can cause both to overcharge and cause a problem. It is possible that the leaking battery that was replaced was the good one and the one you were left with is the cause of the problem. Most autoparts will test your batteries for free, check 'em out.

That is confusing as hell.

I have not had any battery replaced yet.

Oooh, I get it now.

The good battery is really the bad one, and the one leaking used to be the good one but is now the bad one. Because the original bad one made the good one, which is now really the bad one, go bad. So the good one now which was the original bad one is really the bad one now, too.

Don't laugh, it makes sense. Just read it and dont think about it.

I understand. Thanks:)

Both should be replaced at once Two brand new batteries will not be exactly the same and one will be fully charged before the other, the older and more use a battery has (discharges/recharges) the greater the difference will be. Depending on how old your batteries are and the condition of the remaining one (it may be the cause of the other one blowing up) To install a new battery with the old one is going to shorten the expected life of one of the batteries. Now that may be confusing but what ilflem said is not, at least not to me. bg

And that good... er... bad... . ah... the one left over, will probably power my electric fencer for a season... ah... week... . er... day... awh heck, maybe it will destroy the fencer!!!!

kaboom!

I don't know what the deal is with the batteries in the Dodges. A buddy of mine asked me if I had seen the dent in the hood of his truck. When I looked at it ( the truck is black which shows every flaw) I thought some loser mechanic had left something under the hood and slammed the bonnet down on it. Come to find out the battery on the right side blew up. :--)

take the battery that's not blown up and hook it up to a pitch fork with a set of jumper cables and stick the pitch fork in the ground. That'll bring up some good fishin' worms. Oh did I mention you HAVE to drink a 6-er before doing this.

passenger battery?

We're getting a little late in the season, but a discharged battery will easily freeze the electrolye and in turn rupture the case.

I've had problems with my passenger side battery, too. I let the Espar drain them down without getting a good recharge. The passenger side battery has vented enough to ruin the paint on the fender liner. These are new batteries in December, too.

And yes, they should be replaced in pairs same as brake shoes/pads or the shoes on your feet.
