Just wondering if anyone has a 2 car hauler(38-42') for sale, wedge design. Or does anyone know where I could get a set of plans(blueprints) to have one made? thanks to all for the help.

I didnt' say anything before because you said you were looking for plans...

That thing is straight up SCARY looking.

and

Are both about $4000 bucks... .

I had a Kaufman single car hauler and was very happy with it. I sold it and will be getting something biggggger. Haven't decided on what yet (enclosed/open/flatbed or car hauler... )

and $9000 is absolutely ridiculous.

All depends how much use, and where you are going to use it. If you are thinking about doing this full time, rule out the kaufman... . at least the bigger units. The 2 car may not be too bad, I went to their place 5 or 6 years ago..... down a dirt road to the end, their 'plant' is a shed with all the work done outside (at least at that time) there were portable gas powered welders scattered all over the yard, no paint prep either, up north here you get less than a year, and the paint is gone. Wiring is scotch lock splice, and taped, brake wires are wire nutted together, ect. The same is true about a few other 'discount' brands. You can't say the Wally Mo is not worth it, its just how much you plan to use it, down time, maintenance and repairs take their toll, and agrivevation.

I have had my share of cheapies, and I am now saving for a real good quality unit, it is well worth it.

I don't mean to put down any brand, but you get what you pay for, and for the price of a Kaufman, you can't even build it yourself!

My 2 cents.

I was at the Kaufman plant in April '03 and there was nothing being done outside that I could see. yeah there was activity, moving steel, moving trailers and lots of customers. their office is a newer modular looking house and the sales guy was very nice.

yeah the place is at the end of a dirt road and a few old dumpy mobile homes along the way, but I'd rather save a few bucks and not be along a major highway in a shiny new showroom.

wiring is cheap and easy to repair if it fails in a few years.

LeeNH, thanks so much for the f rank description. I have a chance to buy a Take 3(trailer hauler w/ 9K winch, factory center rail, 1 tool box, in excellent cond) 53' for 3500. 00. Only thing, I have a 3/4 Ton Dodge!!! The 40' models are so hard to find. What do you think about the take 3? thanks so much.

Again, I was there years ago, I was just stating what I saw, I am not putting them down.

I too would rather be off the road. But for quality, you can only do so much, unless you are set up for the job (IE: climate controlled work area, jig fixtures for frames, good welding equipment, ect. ) A freind of mine had a Kaufman about 4 years ago, looked like one side of the trailer was MIG welded, and another guy did the other side with a stick welder.

Hey, I have owned a couple, like I said, for the price, why not!

They have a 'ligh weight' model 48' wedge that I would stay clear away from though..... I had one of those, I used it ONCE, man that was scary... . the flex in it was unreal.

The best inexpensive ones I found are Appalacian (spelling?), they are made in Ohio... . actaully a relative of Kaufman that moved away... . better welds, jig fixtures, better fit of materials, but same wiring and paint problems... about the same price.

tmarti96:

If you don't grab that Take3, let me know, I will buy it ASAP, if it is within 1000 miles of me, really.

That is a hell of a deal, with the track, winch and all, can't beat it!!

Brands That I like: (no particular order)

Take 3

Wally Mo

Mo trailers

Ullhaul

Big Tex

Jim Glo

I want to check out Hide a Bed trailers also, but I cant find any around, new or used.

I will probably order a Mo Trailer this spring, they are the best quality and set up I have seen for a trailer transport rig, but the price for quality is about $16,000 for a 53'.

Sun Country makes a good looking one too, but I have never seen one in person

There is a guy running cargo trailers from Michigan (RS transport) with a 48' wedge... . he pulls with a 3/4 ton 2wd, auto... been doing it for a couple years, I can't say what shape the truck is in, or how it handles, but its possible (not legal, but possible).

I did here, although I am not sure of the truth to it, he stopped on a real steep up hill one time with a full load, and the truck would not take off again, it would just rev up to the stall speed of the converter and sit still. I would not doubt it, especially if he did does not have 4:10's.

Cargo Trailers are not even heavy. A cargo hauler trailer probably weighs 6500 pounds and 3 trailers can't weigh more than 2000 each... . If you can't tow 12500 with a CTD then that that is sad. Sounds like a bad transmission. BTW what is illegal about a 48 foot trailer? A 3/4 ton modified properly can be legal to do that and more.

Lee, I found out the Take 3 I mentioned earlier is a Lo Pro Model and has to be pulled with a flat bed or 'Western Hauler' type bed. won't work on a pickup bed. It is in Tulsa, Okla. if you are interested. PM me if you are.

I have a 40' Take 3 I have had for 5 years. Flips on both ends with a 9000# Pierce winch in the nose. I have turned down $5K for it 4 or 5 times. It sits 99% of the time now that I am out of the car biz. I know that as soon as I sell it, I'll need it... ... ... ..... so it just sits there begging me to go on a trip. Also had a channel rail put down the center so I could load boats and pop-up tent trailers. I love the unit. It has always served me well.

I wanted a 40' unit and had to hunt for it hard. The Tx. DOT is death on the 50' triple axle units because of the CDL requirement. With my 2 axle 40' unit, I have never been stopped even with 3 units on the trailer. It pulls great but drags a lot of wind... ... ... ... ... ... . mi dos pesos

I had a 2 car Kaufman wedge. Worked great. Love the cost. I paid under 4k new. If you buy direct you pay there list price. I shopped dealers and got mine closer to home and saved $400.
