Here's another vote for Fleetguard. I buy mine from the local Cummins house.
Drain the fuel cannister first by moving the yellow lever towards the driver's side. Put something on the ground to catch the fuel/water that comes out. I leave the lever open until I get the new filter installed. That eliminates any vacuum as you pull the cap & filter out.
Use a 1-1/8" 6-point socket to unscrew the cap. Don't give into the temptation to just use a 3/8" extension in the square hole on the cap. It will fit well... it will also break that plastic cap.
There is an O-ring on the cap, so it will be stiff. Just keep turning. They are right hand threads, as you would expect. The filter is attached to the cap, so they will come out together.
Wipe out the cannister (carefully) with a lint-free cloth.
Separate the old filter from the cap. It will take a bit of force. Remove the O-ring from the cap.
Use some of that diesel fuel you caught earlier to lube the new O-ring and install it on the cap.
Snap the new filter on the cap and install them in the cannister. There is a torque spec, but with the O-ring, snug is good enough.
CLOSE THE YELLOW HANDLE!!! (Don't ask how I know. )
Bump the starter and leave the key "on". The lift pump will run for about 20 seconds and re-fill the cannister. Some like to do this two or three times, turning the key off after each time.
Start the truck and enjoy!
