2-low switch or fluid coupling front drive shaft?

Where can I get one of these setps? Which would be better the switch or the fluid coupling for the front drive shaft? I want a lower gearing for manuvering a long trailer. If anyone has the fluid coupling, let me know how you like it. Thanks.

BD sells the switch for around $85 I think. You could also make your own. I could find the URL for you if you like, or someone else may post it.

I think there was a write up in the latest TDR about a viscous (sp?) gear drive that you can mount on the TC to allow 4wd use on dry surfaces, therefore not damaging anything. I think cost for the unit was ~$400 and to shorthen the driveshaft was additional. This system obviously has alot of other benefits.

If you have the url or information I would like to see it. I tried to search " 2 low switch modification" with no results. It seems it would be easy to do IF I knew what wire to put a switch into ( the one going to the vacuum motor on the front axle ). Thanks again.

It is my understanding that the vacuum motor has vacuum applied to one port to unlock the front axle and vacuum applied to the other port to lock the axle. I dont see how the modification works. To make it stay in 2 whl drive you would have to maintain a vacuum on the correct port. It is not as simple as blocking (through the vacuum switch) vacuum to the axle lockup port. Perhaps I'm wrong, I'll keep looking at it. Thanks

Why not find the switch that is located on the 2/4 wheel drive stick and wire a switch inline so that it can't activate?

I dunno, I could be badly mistaken, but there is a switch there right?

It seems the lines to activate the center axle disconnect are simply vacuum lines from the transfer case. One line to engage and one line to disengage. Vacuum must be present on one or the other to keep it fully engaged or disengaged. I wish it was as simple as splicing in a switch. I know I have read here about a kit someone came up with to solve the problem.

2 X 4 Switch

Installed BD front disconnect in May. Works as advertised. You have to turn it on before putting the transfer case in 4X4. It took about an hour to install, directions are good, and kit is complete.

I wired my 2-low switch just about as shown in the posted example(don't recall what kind of car I got the vacume switch out of--I just kept trying them untill I found a normally open). At the same time I got some fuses, a fuse panel out of a Subaru and some circuit breakers, and some silinoids--all together they charged me $8. I have used it quite a lot and it works fine.

I had BD install their 2-Lo kit while I was there in April for Dyno Days. It works great! Sure makes backing a trailer up a lot easier with my mods.
