My Dad's 95 seems to siphon oil out of the oil filter after it has set for a few hours. I have noticed this each time I have changed his oil. I unscrew the filter without loosing but just a little oil and when I pull the filter out (remaining upright the whole time) the oil filter is not full. The reason this concerns me has to do with whether the oil reading on the stick is right. Let's say it siphons 1/2 qt back to the oil pan and you check the oil in the morning. It reads full but when you start it and the filter refills then technically the system is 1/2 qt low. I know a 1/2 qt is nothing to sweat when the pan holds so much but I'm just wondering. I've never seen another engine do this.
2nd question I noticed on the Cummins tag on the engine that there is a catalyst number that matches a tag on the CAT... . why? Is this to have them matched for efficiency or just a way to track who's been throwing them away? His cat/muffler mysteriously got smaller and now resembles a straight 3" pipe... . I wonder how that happened! #ad

Thanks guys,
Jerry

My Dad has a 1995 2500 Club Cab blue over gray 2wd, and she's straight piped! I drive a Ford Diesel. What can I say I like 'em both!

Jerry:

I noticed the drain back when I used the Fleetguard microglass filters. This was a good trait!. I extend my oil changes and it was a pleasure changing the filter knowing it was half empty and would make no mess. I now run the Stratapore version and they must have some slight design change as they are always full and messy to change.

I would not worry about the oil volume. It is plus or minus TWO quarts. I rarely run mine complete full and notice once down 1 quart low, no more oil consuption/loss. As long as it above the add mark your fine.

Without a Cat. your in the same boat as any gasser that remove theirs. If your concern, knock out the contents and put it back on.

JJW,
Thanks for the reply. I'm not too concerned about the kitty issue, I was just wondering about the id number on the cat that corresponds with the number on the engine. I have never seen this on a gas engine's cat. I just thought it was odd that the cat had/has a serial number.
Your right about the filter change... it sure is nice not to have oil running all over the truck while removing it!
Thanks again,
Jerry
