Do they still make 2-speed rear ends anymore? I wonder how something like that would work out with a 5 or 6 spd. transmission?

Dennis- the 2-speed axles are still out there for the big rigs and dumps, etc. , but I haven't seen a "smaller" 2-speed axle that would replace the Dana 80. Doesn't mean it's not out there. What is out there is either the US Gear 2-speed aux transmission or the Gear Vendors over/under OD. The result (especially the US Gear) is exactly like a 2-speed rear, uses an electric servo shift. The GV uses a hydraulic clutch powered by a pump driven by the driveshaft and a sun gear. It shifts a bit quicker and smoother, but can't split all the gears ( doesn't work until there's enough speed to get the pressure up) and is not really designed for exhaust braking. I use mine with a 5-speed, and effectively get 3rd, 4th and 5th over, so you could call it an 8-speed. The US Gear would do all speeds. I find I mostly use 4th over and fifth over to suit different driving situations, and only split gears for a heavy load. Hope that helps. JJH

Hello Dennis;
I have the US Gear 20% over, auxiliary transmission in my truck with the five speed and 4x4, It mounts in between the trans and transfer case, which allows use in every gear, two wheel drive or four wheel drive, high and low range, even reverse or engine braking.
I plow snow in low range trasfer case but high range auxiliary trans, gives me better raitos.
My rear axle ratio is 3. 54 with 31. 5 in tire, the 3rd to 4th shift can be a killer when towing up a hill, so being able to split the two is real easy on the truck.
This trans gives me 10 forward speeds and two reverse.
You can leave it in high range all the time if you wish.
It's also available in a 25% under drive.

Ted I was wandering how much difference in speed realized in 5th overdrive and the difference in rpm Is it worth the cost and hasle of changing drive shaft lengths sounds great and could really leave the power chokes behind on the top end . Thanks

Well, I can't speak for Ted- Ramman- but I can tell you that I drop about 450 RPM when I hit fifth over. 70 mph 1800 RPM in my truck. Nice combo for cruising. And given the 3200 top RPM of the ISB, I don't even want to know how fast this truck will go. Can you say off the pin???

These devices are a little pricey aren't they? I believe my neighbors one ton dually installation was $3,500. 00. Fellas, think twice about that 4. 10 ratio. I have the 3. 54
and even when pulling am pleased with the power, of course with my manuel trans, I have
a higher horsepower rating.

With the extra hp. I pulled about 8000lbs. at 75mph. in 5th and o. d. at 2000rpm. Plus the extra gears makes the truck great to drive no, more lugging, no more winding it out.

My RPMs are 1800 at 75 mph, Get this; I was towing a 2 place enclosed snowmoble trailer last fall on the NY thruway, 3 lanes could see for miles, I was cruising at 85 mph and said lets see what she will do, I sqeezed the throttle, next thing in new I was going 125mph and still pulling, I had to let off, got scared about the trailer tires.
