I have a 2006 - 3500 Mega Ram Diesel 4x4 installed with the stock 265/70 R17 tires/rims.

I want to know if I can replace the stock 17' rims with 20' rims and go just slightly wider in tire "width".

I want the look of a larger rim/wheel but has anyone actually installed the rim size I am suggesting? If so, any suggested Manufacturer? What about suggested rim offset (if that is what it is called), to install a slightly wider tire without going past the fender wells.

I am willing to place up to a 3" lift kit if

I would do 8. 5" wide rim with at least 5. 5" backspace or +25mm offset. Stock offset is like +40mm. Go with 275/55/20" tire. Or if you want bigger then 9" or 10" wide rim with 305/50/20 but that's more likely to stick out a bit, would want +30mm offset.

The challenge is finding a wheel that works, most don't have enough offset. Also 20" tires don't have as high of weight rating so you wouldn't want to be towing or hauling very heavy if at all at least with the 275/55/20 tire, which has 2833 lbs rating. The 305/50/20 is better at 3086 lbs which gets you close to the load range E rating of 3195 lbs on the stock Michelins.

I haven't seen a 20" wheel that has the proper width and BS to fit our trucks w/o sticking out past the fenders significantly. I used to run 20's (9. 5" wide, 5" BS) with a 275/60 tire (roughly 33"x11") (see pic) and they stuck out quite a bit, I thought it looked stupid so I finally sold them to fund my 35x12. 50 Toyo M/T's and stock alloy 17" Hummer H2 wheels soon to be painted black Oo.

I also wanted a bigger tire but couldn't run anything larger than what I had on the 20's or I would have had major tire to fender clearance issues at full lock due to the backspacing, even with 2" of lift. And after running the 20's for a while I decided I did not like the all wheel and no sidewall combo on a 4wd truck, it just doesn't look right. I will never run 20's again.

On that note, I have a brand new set of 5 285/65R20 Load Range E BFG All Terrains with the stickers still on them. I will never use them and would be very happy to get them out of my garage :-laf

If you tow heavy at all you'll want to buy forged wheels not cast wheels. 90%+ of the wheels made for for heavy duty trucks are cast. Cast wheels can get stressed from heavy loads and shatter. I had one of my Eagle Alloy wheels blow out years ago. Buy forged because pretty wheels aren't worth dying for.

My trucks are all work trucks... .

We chose a tire first... the same size as whats on our 5500 and than using a tire guide we chose the correct wheel width...

We than had a group of wheels made to fit the correct bolt pattern, wheel offset, wheel width, etc... here's a couple of photos...

Since we wanted work wheels and tires there 19. 5" and have shown to give us over 100K miles from numbers off a F550 which we've sold... by far the lowest cost per mile of any of our trucks...

Since this tire is a bit larger in diameter we're spot on now with the speedometer based on our GPS...

Our problem with the gucci wheels is that none of them are rated for what we tow. Kinda like them tiny trophy wifes... Great to look at but when actually go to use em theres some limitations.

After reading the reply posts up to 1/21/2010, I now realize I did not factor in the "towing" capability and/or restrictions. Yes, I do tow. It's a 36 ft travel trailer monster and no, it's not light.

Seems after reading the posts that the 20" rim idea is not a good match for the type of driving/towing I do with my 2006 - 3500 diesel 4x4 Mega-Cab . I would still like to go to a slightly larger rim than the stock 17".

Therefore, if anyone has any other suggestions as to a 18" or 19" rim set-up that will allow me to tow and still look "mod", I'm still listening.

Thanks to all who posted their tire/wheel pic set-up so I could better judge the finished product. Big help.
