Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 2000 auto trans 4x4 2500 will not shift out of first

ok the wife drove the truck today and it did fine, I got in it and it wouldn't shift out of first gear? recent transmission build and has been doing fine. any suggestions?
fluid level is good, bright red
check engine light is not on
