Lost transmission out on I-30 just west of Texarcana TX. Had a rumble from transmission tunnel... gear shift slammed out of 6th back into 5th. Pushed clutch in, put in neutral and coasted to side of highway. Loud grinding noises if I start truck and release the clutch.

Dodge dealer says not the clutch. They will check out transmission tomorrow to see what the problem may be.

Any suggestions on a rebuild, other than the Mopar solution? Mopar solution is approx $9,000, plus labor.

Truck is used for daily driving, but also pulls a fifth wheel. Was doing that at time transmission went out.

Minor mods to truck. Banks basic box, 4" exhaust, exhaust brake, turbo housing upgrade.

Thanks for any advice.

I wouldn't let the dealership disassemble your transmission, probably wouldn't even let them remove it. I'd have a tow truck haul the truck to an independent shop in Texarkana capable of removing and reinstalling the transmission and ask them to remove it and set it in the bed of rented pickup.

I'd take it direct to either of the two rebuilders suggested above. I had personal experience with Standard in Ft. Worth. They rebuilt the dying NV-5600 in my '01 a little over three years ago. Great work, honest friendly service, and fair price.

I have not had personal experience with Blumenthals but I am confident they a very professional choice.

NV 5600 Blown - update

Thanks for the info!! Dodge did remove the tran, and took a look at it. Some bearings and other things associated with 6th gear are shot.

My cousin, Rick, Parts Dept at Mt. Pleasant Toyota, east of Dallas, came through for me, and contacted Standard over in Ft. Worth. They're shipping a tran out and it should be here tomorrow. Kevin at Valair is shipping a cluth and accessories and they should be here tomorrow. Going to let local Dodge dealer do the replace. Truck was already there before I could get to a computer to ask my questions, or we would have it at an independent shop. McLarty AutoMall (Harlan) has been fair with me.

Everything seems to be falling into place.

I do love Texas hospitality and can-do attitude!! Just can't stand the summers (grin)

Thanks again for all your advice!
