I'm posting this for my buddy, he's hit on some tough times and his luck has run shorter than ever. He relies on his truck for all income, it works hard for him skidding and hauling logs. His injection pump (code 1688), and lift pump(0230?) died night before last, The truck is a 2000 Ram 3500 24V CTD 235hp, 5 speed. I need to help him out in a bad way, where could I find an Injection pump or lift pump for a good price, he's in a bad way, so all help and input is appreciated.

I decided to add some pics so y'all could see it really was a working truck and not a street cruiser, my truck is on the trailer in one pic, he brought me in when I lost a wheel bearing away from home.

I'm not up the the years but I assume it's the VP44 injection pump. They fail when the lift pump fails to keep fuel up to the VP. A qualified shop can plug into the pump and troubleshoot whats wrong. Hope this helps, in the future he should have a fuel pressure gauge in the dash to monitor lift pump pressure. Hopefully someone will chime in a good price for a rebuild.

VP44s are available from most places. Check with Industrial Injection for prices on a stock unit. They are probably around $1200. You can find them for less on E-Bay, but I do not know if I would trust them.

Try replacing the lift pump first. It's probably the root cause and will need to be replaced anyway.

Geno's Garage has the lift pumps I believe.

mberry, I already replaced his lift pump with one I had layin around, I tested it before I put it on and it works fine. truck still has dead pedal, idles like a pullin tractor, and is very hard to start.

Assuming that you have already checked the "big plug" on the VP? Checked fuel pressure at the VP schrader? What is the pressure?

What about the APPS? If he is working the hell out of it like you say... . You have a lot of things to look at.

You replaced the lift pump with one you had laying around? This sounds like the kiss of death. Was it an old pump or a new one?

Assuming he has the lift pump in the original location. Installing an older, or used pump is planned obsolescence. Especially if it is an older pump without the bypass circuit.

If you have any local Vocational schools around, they will usually rebuild the injection pump just for the cost of parts. Otherwise I would buy the new VP from a reputable source like "industrial injection".

Relocating the factory pump to the frame rail is a good idea if the VP is dead. With a bypass circuit and a gauge or idiot light... . It is unlikely that it would ever fail again.

Be sure to check that plug and let us know what the fuel pressure is.

Regards,

AJ

I'll find a fuel pressure gauge and let y'all know about that, the pump is an old one off my truck, one I took off that was 7000 miles old when I put the FASS on, I put it on after the IP died on us, we planned to replace it ASAP if it worked and as soon as we replaced the IP if not. APPS is in good working order as per a Snap on Diagnostic tool.
