i installed the donaldson 4 inch muffler today. Man is it quite. The drone is completely gone. Its almost as quite as stock. I'm gonna miss the noise around town. But I'm gonna enjoy the quietness on the interstate while pulling.

I'm guessing you have the 51". Did you install it yourself?

I'm looking at the Donaldson, Nelson, or MBRP. The Rokktech sensor adds some noise and I would like to quiet the truck down a bit. My cat falling off hasn't helped matters either.

Yea, I know they make several. Thats why I'm gonna post the part # :-laf . It is the 51 inch muffler. Yes, I installed it myself. I had just straight 4 inch exhaust. When I got the muffler, I remembered I had a stick of aluminum 4 inch pipe laying in the shop. So now I have a Hybrid exhaust system:D . Steel downpipe, aluminum piping for DP to muffler and steel exhaust tip.

Aluminum gets very soft (annealed), after a while at high temperature. Make sure it doesn't loosen and fall off.

Has anyone ran this muffler with there stacks? If so, how does it sound? I have a regular cab and I had to take off my stacks because I couldn't stand the horrible drone I had. If this works, I might have to give it a try. I know that stacks are supposed to be loud, but I would love a quiet setup if possible.

Chris, I hate to say this, but I tried a myriad of different mufflers under my single cab to kill the earsplitting resonance from my stacks... each one I tried made it WORSE (I know, hard to do, right?)

I think the problem is you have that muffler right under the floorboard, and you get resonance off of IT...

with that said, you might try a MBRP muffler because they're packed and should resonate less than a hollow can style.

good luck with it, a single cab + stacks is like dating a crazy chick... you want to get rid of her, but she's just so fun a lot of times ;)

M090544 is the part number for the Donaldson muffler.

Thanks for the info. Just one question: I am cat-less with the stock muffler. Would the Donaldson make my truck quieter, the same, or more noisy?

Thanks,

Olin

I don't know. I've never taken just the cat off. I always take it all off. But I think my truck is at least as quiet as a stock exhaust. It has a different sound though. I hate it around town, but I love it on the interstate while towing.

It sounds like you've dropped your cat. If you are getting near stock without a cat I think the Donaldson is the muffler for me. At the worst I could always put the stock muffler back on. Thank you for the info, that is what I wanted to know. :)

I ran (2) 30" MBRP mufflers back to back and it didn't work. I think part of my problem is that I had 6" turnouts which made the system a lot louder. If I go back to them, I think I might try going down to 5" turnouts or miters and also wrap the internal muffler with fiberglass to deaden the sound. I think that should work. If not, then it wasn't meant to be. I'll let everyone know if it works when I do it.

My stacks are still a bit to loud when pulling my lawn trailer. I have dropped down from 6" to 5" stacks. Also, running a MBRP 30" muffler. It's still not cutting it.

I'm looking for a muffler that will give me near stock sound while driving/pulling a trailer but not have the restriction like the OEM one's. Does this donaldson 51" muffler offer that? The wife has told me to make final decision, either my stacks get a lot quieter or they get taken off and I go back to a single system. I keep waking up the baby when I come home. I hate wasting $$ on different mufflers to get my stacks to work. Maybe there's no hope for us reg. cab 3rd gen guys w/ stacks.

I see no reason to have stacks if you're not gonna let 'em sing :(

I agree. That's why it's making my decision hard. I get a lot of compliments on them and I love them, but if it has to come down to being quiet for my family, then that's the sacrafice I'll deal with.
