Guys,

This ain't no more than talking, but I know of a 2000 VW Beetle Turbo Diesel, manual transmission of course. less than 38,000 miles on it. Its for sale, but not on the market officially yet. Haven't seen it lately, but it was in decent but not pristine condition when I saw it last. Getting it would keep from racking up the miles on the '05 at 290 miles per day right now, don't ask it ain't worth the ones and zeros to explain it.

Comments? Market $$ ? Especially frm VW owners.

Darn, mis-spelled Beetle in title.

Grab it.

Run an injection pump lubricant in it every tankful ($1400. 00 lesson here), check the EGR and intake for build up. If clean or you get it cleaned (a mite more miserable project on a Beetle as opposed to a Jetta) then find a VW groupie that owns the VAG-Com Software and turn the EGR cycles way down.

Timing Belt, I'd almost do it right off the bat with the upgraded idler bearings and what not from VW. Then you should have 100,000 mles of care free motoring.

Also, it should start at the touch of the key. If you have doubts let me know and I will record a sound byte from Gizmo for you as a reference.

My pump shop insisted that I run Cen-Pe-Co fuel treatment for the lubricity. It only draws fuel via the injection pump and todays fuel is too dry.

We have a 99. 5 Jetta. Same engine. Never put any extra lube in the fuel. I wouldn't waste my $$. 150+ k and zero issues other than the clogged intake manifold which has been cleaned out 2 times. We get an honest 48+ mpg on trips at 75-80 mph with the car loaded. In Ct we sometimes double glow if the car is left outside overnite. If inside at 40 we don't wait, it strarts easy.

I am not an additive man as a rule but went along with it in this case for two reasons... .

1) When pricing a reman pump from VW a bottle of additive comes with it... ... . interesting at the least.

2) My pump guys demanded it be done and where they will be responsible for any warranty I do it. And I also buy the additive there so they know it is being done. They are very good to both me and Freightliner Of Maine. If there is an issue they will be there for me.

On the glow plugs after running it for a full winter I did double key cycles on the first few cold mornings, then let it have it's way. At that point I learned it will extend the time on it's own, at -20 below they stay on a looong time. Hit the key when they go out and it will start. Pretty impressive.

No HEAT for a while mind you, but it is running. :D

Guys,

Thanks for the info, I'm still in the thinking stage but I have a good connection with the owner. More to follow.

From what I have read on TDI forums that simple older 1. 9 liter TDI is a very desirable model to own and the manual transmission is considered a better choice by many. That is probably a great little car if you can buy it right.

I ignore and have always ignored the common wisdom about fuel additives in my Dodge-Cummins trucks but a majority of owners on TDI websites and a TDI mechanic I have communicated with all offer the advice to use 4 oz. of Power Service or other additive with every tank. It doesn't cost much to do at 40+ mpg so I've been doing it.

I read something on one of the TDI sites suggesting as Mike stated, the glow plug electronics will hold the heat cycle longer in colder temps.

I forgot to explain - I have an '09 JSW TDI I bought used last October. I drive it now and my truck sits abandoned in the barn. I really like these little VW TDIs. They are fun to drive, quick, and economical. I've put almost 10k miles on it in just a few months.

Guys,

We got a ways to go on this one yet, still theorizing and what if'n.

One sorta bad thing, nearest VW dealer ain't close by.

Gary

Sounds like the GW may be taking up residence next to the truck soon.

No, the GW is my preferred ride. The VW is my transportation during extreme bad weather or when I have to take my children (German Shepherds) or haul a package.

TDR member Dick Trombley is supposed to arrive here this afternoon and will have his Hardley in a trailer. We're going to head south to ride the TX Hill Country.

Please say Hello to Dick for me, he should be in for some good riding. Gonna' keep that Harley behind you, right????:D

Mike.

Mike,

I'll tell him you said hello. He's got his fifthwheel toybox hooked up out back next to my barn and is outside making phone calls right now. We've made our reservations for the Hill Country ride leaving here Saturday morning.

Yep, the Hardley will be behind me - way behind me on the Three Sisters.
