Wife's 2000 -2500 Q. C. 4x4 won't start. Yesterday she downshifted for traffic, and when she went to go, the motor died. Motor cranks over, but just won't start. Mechanic checked crankshaft position sensor and it checks out ok. Lift pump weak and is going to replace. Spliced in a different lift pump, good output, but no fuel is getting to the injector lines. The talk now is possibly the ECM (but highly unlikely he says), the injector pump, or what? The check engine light is on, but I don't know if any codes were set, or if they checked for any.

The mechanic wants to send the pump out for testing, but I can't wait the two weeks to get it done. Is something wrong electrically that won't allow fuel to pass the pump?

You cracked a few of the injector lines & no fuel? If so, my guess would be the VP. Code reader needed I believe... . On the later models you can turn the keys ON-OFF (3) times & after the 3rd time leave the key on & watch the odometer display. The 0216 is the "VP Death Code".

Is there anyone in your area that has a Smarty that could be borrowed... Built in code reader.

Good Luck & keep us posted.

scotty-u,

A friend had the same deal, ended up being one of the fuses in the Power Dist Center (sorry, don't remember which one). The fuse looked good, tested good, but when replaced it fixed the problem.

Also, check VP44 elec connections, make sure they are good.

Godspeed,
Trent

Very easy test... ... ..... both Cummins and Dodge dealers should have a Hot box. It plugs into the vp-44 and uses battery connection to power up the injection pump. It will eliminate all the vehicle electronics. You can do the same thing with jumper wires but is risky if you grab the wrong terminals.

Update to 2000 will not fire.

Talked to the mechanic this morning, and found code 361 (or something like that he said) electrical malfunction at the VP. If this is the problem, has the pump seized up? Knowing that the lift pump was not suppling adequate fuel, has permanent damage occured to the VP, and is it wise to just replace it now, and possibly hope that fixes the problem, OR should the pump be sent out for testing?

How much are you into this for now, the diagnostic, labor, etc. ? You need to realize the cost of a VP is going to set you back in the neighborhood of at least $1,000 +/- for the pump and the R & R labor if you don't plan on doing it yourself.

If I were in the same situation as you appear to be (being unsure what's actually going on and not being able to diagnose/R & R the VP yourself), I'd consider starting a new post asking fellow TDR members in our area who/what/where is there a reputable shop that is familliar with the Dodge/Cummins combo. I'll reach out to a friend in my area and see if he knows someone in your area. Where's New Oxford, PA?

Hate to say it, but it sounds like the wifey mobile is going to nee a new VP.
