Detroit Diesel Series 60 12.7

Upside down Ford

I have had my auto transmission rebuilt and is working fine. Prior to rebuild I could pull 4x4 lever and go into 4x4H while moving. Now my gears grind when I try it. Any suggestions.

I suspect you are having a grinding of the front axle shaft? They use a vacuum shift motor and when the collar and shaft get worn, they can act up. Also, you need to check the condition of the vacuum harness and the rubber connections. They will swell over the years due to exposure to ATF and then they will suck air, leak and cause lack of shift motor travel. Usually the t-case shifts quickly and just "pops" into 4x4..................then the rest of the magic happens at the front axle. Did you figure this out yet?

Keep in mind that your '01 has a synchronized transfer case. It has to bring the ring and pinion up to speed to get the axle shaft spinning forward and at the same speed as the RH stub axle before the axle shift motor is engaged. Can you feel the grind in the TC shift lever, or is it something you hear up front after the TC is in 4WD?
